She grew up in Winnipeg. Her family came to Canada in the 1920s: she thinks her father came in 1922 and her mother probably came at the same time. They came from Ukraine separately, but they met up in Winnipeg. Her parents came from separate villages in the Ternopil area. Olga lived in Madison, Wisconsin for from 1955 to 1959 as her husband went to university.\n\nOlga's father worked for Winnipeg's health department. He did different jobs: he would clean streets and collect garbage, and other sanitation duties.\n\nOlga completed her grade 12 education in Winnipeg. Before she was married, Olga worked in an office. After she was married, she worked in the house. When her husband died in the 1980s, Olga tried to get jobs but had no special training so she worked at places like 7/11.\n\nOlga grew up with a sister who was 2 years younger than her. For lunch, they would have sandwich and milk or cocoa. In the evening, Olga's mother would make either meat and potatoes with vegetables, or potato pancakes, or perogies.\n\nOn Christmas, they didn't necessarily have the 12 dishes, but they would have things like perogies, fish, and a little bit of the 12 dishes.\n\nAt the store, they would purchase meat, and potatoes. They had a garden, so they had their own vegetables in the summer. They would purchase milk and cereals, as well. From the garden, they would grow carrots, peas, onions, spinach, tomatoes, and corn.\n\nFor clothing, girls wore dresses as they didn't wear slacks in those days. Olga's mother used to sew their clothes. They had basic things like beds in their bedrooms. There were two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room and dining room. It was all sort of 1 room, rather than separate rooms. More areas instead of rooms. They had photographs on the walls. They had a picture of a plane that was painted yellow and blue. She wanted to live in a city because she thought it would be a better life. She had lived in a village and on a farm in the old country, so she didn't want that again. She regretted her choice afterwards as she didn't like city life as much as she thought she would. When he first arrived in Canada, Olga's father was a farmhand. In the summer, Olga's mother would go out to the farms and help with the harvesting.\n\nOlga's mother did sewing and embroidering. Not much knitting. She would make pillows, sheets, quilts, and clothing.\n\nOlga's family belonged to the Blessed Virgin Mary Church. That's where Olga grew up and did catechism. It was a Ukrainian Catholic Church, but was once called the Greek Catholic Church. At church they would gather early and bless food. They never made pysanky. Her mother might have made the eggs in the old country, but they didn't in Canada.\n\nBirthdays were celebrated. Olga's mother would make a cake. They had a very quiet birthday as opposed to birthdays nowadays. Olga usually received a gift from her godmother, her friend, and her parents. Olga's godmother was a neighbour.\n\nDominion Day was not celebrated.\n\nThey would have a get-together on Thanksgiving and have turkey or chicken.\n\nOn Halloween, Olga and her sister would go out, but their parents did not do anything for it. They stopped going out around age 11. They would purchase masks for their costumes, but the costumes were not elaborate. They didn't go very far or stay up very late on Halloween.\n\nOn New Years Eve, they would go to house parties at friends' places. On New Years day, they would go to church and then get together with friends or relatives.\n\nThey had parish feast days at their church. She doesn't remember her parents singing, but they used to listen to polka on the radio. They would also listen to speeches and stories on the radio about things in Ukraine or Canada.\n\nOlga's parents would tell stories about their lives: how they lived in Ukraine, sad stories, funny stories. Olga's father used to pick apples off a tree and his father (Olga's grandfather) told him not to pick too many, just 1 or 2. He shook the tree and a bunch of apples fell down. He tried tying them back onto the tree, but Olga's grandfather could see the string straight away. Olga's father had a younger brother with epilepsy that would get lost quite a bit. Once, they spent an entire night searching for him and found him sleeping in a cemetery. She went to Ukrainian school to learn the language. She would attend concerts with the church, as well. She started Ukrainian dance when she was in her teens.\n\nOlga's first language was Ukrainian. She picked up English playing with other kids. She learned formal English in public school. She went to night school to learn how to write Ukrainian. In junior high, she took French and Latin but didn't learn how to speak them. Olga's parents' friends were from church or from work. Olga's mother worked at Eaton's and privately cleaning houses. They had friends at work and friends at church. No real close friends except maybe neighbours. Olga didn't play many sports besides baseball.\n\nFor entertainment, Olga's family would read, listen to the radio, visit people, going to church events. Her parents didn't get out much after their work days ended.
