Manitoba. He has two sisters. He spent also three years in Madison, Wisconsin. He has a Ph.D. He taught mostly in high school, sometimes also in college.\nHe identifies himself as German Mennonite and also as Canadian. He spent Christmas frequently with his grandparents, they were singing carols in German and English. They had a German Christmas Tree with candles. Easter wasn't celebrated very big although they had Easter eggs.\nThe cooking in his family was influenced by the Russian cuisine, they had borshch, although his mother's family came from Danzig (Gdansk).\nThe family did play musical instruments, he was playing the piano and the violin.\nRiesen talks about which holidays were celebrated in his family and which not. Birthdays were celebrated, Halloween too.\nThe family did a lot of singing, especially at Christmas.\nHe grew up with the stories of Wilhelm Busch. But when the WW II broke out, the family switched to English which they both knew well. Both languages were used at home. After the war, he was speaking German again, later he would learn also French. He took also German classes in high school and in university.\nHis classmates were of Hungarian, German and Ukrainian ancestry.\nHis neighbours in Regina, Saskatchewan, were English speakers. His best friends had English background too. He recalled several plays.
