(Later she corrects herself: She was born in 1936.) She grew up on a farm seven miles from the city limits, next to the number 3 Lethbridge highway. Kosmick isn't sure about the exact date when her parents came to Canada. It was in the early 1930s. She was the youngest of seven siblings, her oldest brother was eight years old when she was born.\nKosmick recalls that her parents were born in Germany but she can't remember the place: \"Terrible\". She states that her sister should doing the interview as she remembers everything. She corrects herself: Her parents were born in Romania. Asked whether her father was born in Bessarabia, Kosmick states that she thinks her father was a child when he moved there. However, she isn't sure about that and thinks that her father was \"definitely\" born in Germany, she thinks it was West Germany because in the East, there were the communists but she doesn't know if the communists were there then, probably not. Kosmick says she is sorry that she doesn't know that. She is sure that her mother was born in the same village. She once again states that she feels sorry that she doesn't remember the name.\nA year after Kosmick married, they moved to Detroit. They got married in 1955. They stayed there for 22 years.\nKosmick finished grade 11. She worked on her parents' farm as a child before moving to Edmonton to stay with her oldest sister for a year because she had four small children and needed somebody to help her. Kosmick took her grade 9 in Edmonton and moved back the following year, and after spending the summer on the farm, she moved to Medicine Hat to stay with her other sister. She took grade 10 and 11 in Medicine Hat. Already during her high school years, she used to work in a store on weekends. After she quit high school, she worked in a photography shop in Medicine Hat.\nKosmick considered her ancestry as German.\nKosmick grew up with her parents and six siblings. The interviewer asks whether she was spoiled as the youngest child but Kosmick doesn't think so. Maybe it got a little bit easier for the younger children workwise on the farm but maybe not because her oldest siblings left the farm in their early 20s. One of her brothers spent some time in the Canadian army for a year or two. Just her younger brother and two sisters were still on the farm when she was growing up. They had a lot of milk, and her mother made cottage cheese and butter milk. They didn't have a lot of vegetables due to lack of irrigation and they ran out of water. They grew mostly potatoes but didn't eat a lot of meat. The only place to store food cool was their cellar.\nFor breakfast, they had cornflakes and oatmeal. When they went to school, they had sandwiches, mostly peanut butter sandwiches. They also ate jam and apples. Sometimes, her mother would buy bananas. Usually, they went to town on Friday to purchase their groceries. Kosmick describes their meals as \"pretty sparse\" though they never went hungry. Her mother would make a lot of dough dishes like Strudla (Strudel). Kosmick describes in detail how that was made. Sometimes they also had Kässpetzla (Käsespätzle). She describes them as some \"pyrohy-pierogies\". Her mother would also make \"Kucha\" (Kuchen), a sort of pie with cottage cheese, cream and fruit baked in the oven. Her mother would made these dishes primarily in the wintertime. They had a coal stove to heat the house and cook, so the stove was on all the time. Apart from that, they got some money from selling the crops after threshing in October. He would seed wheat in the spring. When she was very little, they still used horses for ploughing as they didn't have a tractor then. Her father also repaired the machinery. She had to help with the fencing when her older brothers were gone. They had pigs too.\nKosmick's mother did basically the same things, however, not all the time. The seeding was a task exclusively for her father and brothers. They also had hay. They had a big slough behind the house, and when that dried up, they had a lot of hay growing which they used to cut down. They had to ridge it up and put it in big piles. \nAnother chore the whole family had to do was to water the cattle. They had to take the cows down to the well, or to a little dam they had on their farm. They had to do that twice a day. As they had a lot of land, they had other places where they would water the cattle. In one section, they had well from where they could pump the water into the troughs.\nKosmick recalls that her parents also raised chickens. Her mother canned them in jars for the wintertime. Her mother had customers around Medicine Hat where she would deliver chickens and bottled cream. Her father would drive. Kosmick was about 11 years old when her parents got their first car. Before that, the hitched up the horses to the wagon or the buggy and went to town. Her second-oldest brother was the first driver of the car. When her brother left, her father had to learn to drive. Their first car was a Chevrolet. (Kosmick and her husband discuss year of construction of the car. It wasn't a brand new one when Kosmick's parents got it. Her mother had crochetings she had brought from the old country on the wall. They didn't have pictures, except for a few family pictures from the old country. The walls were covered with wallpaper. Their house was very small. Every couple of years, Kosmick's mother would re-wallpaper the walls. She painted all the furniture like the kitchen chairs and the table. She had a \"bottom thing\" cupboard where her mother put the pots and pans but Kosmick can't remember that there was anything at the top, there was nothing on the wall above it. Only later, her parents went to an auction sale and bought a cabinet, with drawers at the bottom and little doors. Her mother was really proud of that. It was made of natural wood, so she never painted that. Her mother always had an oil cloth on the table.\nThey had a wood stove with little doors on the top to keep things warm there.\nKosmicks mother used to crochet and knit socks and gloves. Her second-oldest brother was very good at woodwork. On Sundays, they got up very early, cleaned the house, washed to floors. Her mother used to sit in the bedroom on Sundays and to read the bible. When they finally got a radio (Kosmick was about 12-13 then), her father would sit in his wooden chair (they never had any upholstered furniture) and listen to a church service on the radio, or he would listen to the news.\nWhen they were little but already could read, the children would sit on their father's knees and read the German bible. So they learned to read German. Apart from that, Kosmick never took lessons in German: \"We just grew up with the language, eh.\" Her parents spoke German all the time to each other and to their children. As she was the youngest in the family, she had learned some English from her older siblings before. Her older siblings would talk English as well as German to each other. When her oldest brothers went to school, it was difficult for them for a while as they knew only German at the beginning. Kosmick recalls an incident when she was talking to her teacher in school. She wanted to say dresser but didn't know the word, so she said \"Kommode\" (she pronounces it \"commode\"). The teacher laughed at her because she didn't know what she was saying. Then Kosmick realized that she had used a German word.\nKosmick spoke German to her parents but gradually spoke more English. However, her parents would always respond in German. Her father was \"very adamant\" about his children speaking German in the house because he wanted them to keep their heritage. She remembers only one time that her mother made eggs, when she was probably four or five years old.\nKosmick can't recall any other holidays. Birthdays weren't celebrated. She didn't even know what Dominion Day was. She thinks that her parents also didn't know about that, nobody talked about it. She describes an area in Medicine Hat where farmers from the surroundings sold vegetables at a farmers market. The farmers (including her parents) would gather there and talk. They would also have lunch in town, and her parents would always eat fish as they didn't have that on the farm. Around four o'clock, they left town and drove home. She wouldn't always accompany her parents, especially, after she had started school. Often her parents weren't home yet when she returned from school. Kosmick didn't like to be on the farm alone, she was always scared. She just sat in the kitchen and waited for someone to come home.\nKosmick is asked about other holidays but she can't remember that her parents celebrated them. Half a mile away, behind the school, in a little valley, there was another family but the house wasn't visible from Kosmick's parents' place. Her parents would visit this family, they were also of German background. There was another family she believes was of German descent, their children went to school with them. They were a mile away from them.\nKosmick's best friends were the children of a family her parents knew well. They did some visiting, the family lived 4-5 miles away. It seemed very far away for her then. It was a big family, and they were their friends. Two of their girls were of her age. There weren't too many other girls. She wasn't good friends with the boy, just with the girls. As they lived so far from each other, they didn't see each other a lot except for school: \"That's where our friendship started and ended, unless we went visiting\". They did visit once or twice in the summer, always on Sundays. That wasn't until they got a car.\nLater on, another family moved out on a farm from Medicine Hat. She was five or six then. They became friends with them, and they would just walk over to each other. There was one girl, Shirley Schmidt, her father didn't really farm, she doesn't know what he did, he worked in town.\nWhen Kosmick was in grade 7 or 8, there was another family that moved out on a farm but not close to them. Their children went to the same school, and she befriended one of the girls. They just talked and hung out together. She doesn't remember that they played any games. Sometimes they rode horseback on Sundays. They had two horses they rode.\nIn the late 1950s or early 1960s, a photographer took an aerial shot of their farm. Her parents got the picture. Kosmick remembers that one time her father was \"really mad\" because she didn't come to the market place on time. She wanted to go to the show \"so bad\" and she knew she shouldn't. It was the Roxy Theatre which was very close to the market centre. She saw her father walking down the aisle looking for her, and she knew that she was \"in trouble\". She never did that again.\nKosmick watched mostly cowboy and Western shows. Later, she watched a lot of musicals. She enjoyed the Westerns more than anything.
