Mary's father had a grocery business on what was then known as the Market Square, but it is now the site of the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. Mary was in Sunday school there. She also attended the Y (probably YMCA) for a time, taking gym, dancing, and swimming. In summers, they often went to Vancouver on holiday, or to Seba Beach, west of Edmonton. She remembers those as happy years. Mary says life was a slower pace back then and Edmonton has changed so much.\n\nMary's father came to Canada from Scotland in 1906. He spent a winter in Winnipeg before going back to Scotland. He came back to Canada not long after, but came to Edmonton. Mary's mother came to Canada in 1921 and the two were married in Edmonton. They led a busy life. Mary's mother would talk about how much Edmonton had changed. Mary's parents met during the War (World War I) when her father was overseas. They were both from the same place, but hadn't known each other over there. Mary's mother went back to visit in 1951, but hadn't been back since she came over in 1921.\n\nMary thinks her father came to Canada because it was a challenge and that there were few opportunities in Scotland. She thinks her father went back to Scotland after his first winter due to homesickness. That first winter was spent on a farm near Winnipeg in a place called Oak Lake. She thinks he was probably mistreated there, isolated, and the food was poor.\n\nMary thinks her father held onto his heritage when he arrived. He was part of a Scottish Society (possibly the Caledonian Society) which he was quite active in. There were also a large number of Scottish people in their church. If there was any entertainment or connection from Scotland, he always got involved in it.\n\nThey lived in the Norwood area of Edmonton. They would travel to Vancouver via train. They also used to visit Seba Beach by train until buses started running there, at which point they would take buses. The Vancouver train made a stop at Seba where a democrat wagon would collect the train's passengers who might stay the night at a boarding house. After that, however, Mary's mother wasn't well and came to Ottawa to live with Mary and her husband. Mary found she had to stay around the house to help her mother. There were social functions involving her husband's air force career that Mary participated in. She was also involved with the women's groups at the St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Her husband's unit was transferred to Cold Lake, and while Mary and her husband weren't keen on living in Cold Lake, they did move with the unit. Mary said things were good there since roads had improved and they could drive to and from Edmonton where they had friends and relatives. Mary's mother passed away when they were still in Ottawa, so the move wasn't difficult. Mary and her husband would golf in the summer and bowl in the winter. Cold Lake was the perfect place for those that like to hunt and camp because of all the nearby lakes.\n\nMary's parents didn't have any recreational activities that Mary remembers. Her father worked at the grocery for long hours as it was a busy store. He didn't golf or curl, and neither did Mary's mother. Mary thinks those things weren't as popular back then; not as many people took part. Her boss at McGavin's enjoyed golfing; he was also good friends with Mary's father.\n\nMary identifies as a Canadian of Scottish descent, though she says she would have answered \"Scottish Canadian\" at one time. She says she does lean Scottish and has traveled to Scotland many times.
