They would walk to Edmonton Beach and they would walk back when they had to milk the cows. Helen's family didn't have swimming suits until they were gifted some. Helen's father didn't think swimwear was necessary, and there was no money for non-necessities.\n\nHelen would read English language books that she got from the library. She would read them out loud in Ukrainian because her father couldn't read. Helen's father would pick up books from the Ukrainian Book Store in Edmonton.\n\nHelen says there was lots of snow back then, but weather wasn't as bad as it is now. People were also friendlier back then. Doctors from Stony Plain would come to a person's house using a horse and buggy. Otherwise, there would be Old Country remedies such as goose lard and turpentine rubbed on the chest. Once, Helen's brother's appendix burst and he was taken to the hospital in Edmonton. He was maybe 20 years old at the time. Birth was done with a midwife at home. The midwife was a neighbour with experience in childbirth. Helen says the babies were healthier then than they are now.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58558/file/132578#t=0.0,490.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58558/file/132578/index/52499/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"entertainment and recreation","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"folk medicine","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"reading","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"weather","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58558/file/132578#t=0.0,490.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58558/file/132578/index/52499/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Activities, memories, city vs country","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58558/file/132578#t=490.0,1137.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58558/file/132578/index/52499/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"For activities, people would play cards.
