There was a time when one little boy (whose name was Walter) lived with his parents for several months because there were some problems in his family. The boy was also Ukrainian. He used the car every day to get to the job as it was several miles away.\nThey used to go to Banff for the day, visited the hot springs. He went to the Alexander school, which was about one mile away. There was a neighbour boy ( the name of the boy was Frank Wright? ) who was walking with him (he was seven years old and attended the same grade again as he failed the grade one). The mother of the interviewee asked this older boy to walk with her son to school as she was afraid letting him go alone at the age of six. For this the neighbour boy received some threats from her (such as apples and bananas).\n\nSince Mr. Sawicki lived close, he never took lunch to school. Instead, he went back home for lunch every day. At school, the girls and the boys were not allowed to play on the same side and he never knew why.\nThe elementary school did not organize any extra-curriculum events.\nIn the later school years, some girls taught other children to dance. Mr. Sawicki went from grade one to grade three and skipped grade two. There were about thirty children in one class. \nThe interviewee created a book based on his biography. The two of his aunts were teachers, and they were a kind of models for him, so he decided to become a teacher as well. His mother strongly believed in education; his father was illiterate. \nThe interviewee is analyzing the group of people from the Ukrainian community who immigrated to Canada. During his school times, he thought of going with his drama teacher to Vancouver in order to become an actor, but he was afraid to do this and to tell his mother as he knew she wanted him to become a teacher. The doctor needed to come and see him each time when he was sick. Once, he was in a hospital and needed to stay isolated for a month. When people sent him the gifts, he could not take them back from the hospital as they could still have had germs on them, so these gifts needed to be burned. Each visit to the doctor did cost three dollars. Many people who did not have money did not call the doctor if they were sick and just died. A tooth filling did cost three dollars; an extraction did cost two dollars. Many of those people who did not have the three dollars to get the tooth filling done paid two dollars to extract it.\nWhen he was eight years old, the city burned the weeds, and there was a significant amount of burning ashes around. Just for fun, children decided to throw an old mattress on these burning ashes and were jumping on it and running around. As he did it, he fell on the ashes and burned his hand.
