All her parents' children were born at home with a midwife.\nHer father came to Canada in 1907, her mother (her maiden name was Rose Partridge) in 1911. Her parents had been farmers in England and had met each other over there. Her mother had wanted to go to South Africa to join her sister but her father wrote to her mother and asked her to marry him and come to Canada what she did. Her mother never saw her family again. Wignes recalls that her mother took it nine days to come over with the ship. Her parents were the first couple to marry in the newly-built church of Humboldt. The city had been quite a primitive place then. Her mother came from a wealthy family in England with servants and the situation seemed unreal to her mother. Her parents got married when her mother got off the train, and hasn't seen her future husband in eleven years (she was 32 then).\nWignes' parents had five surviving children (one died in infancy). In 1924, the house burnt down. The only thing they saved was the piano, everything else her mother had shipped over from England was lost. The family lived in a machine shed until a new house was built. Her parents came from Berkshire, England. Her father died at the age of 49 in 1928. Then, her mother would rent out the land. It was very hard until her younger brother could farm himself.\nThe had a lovely flower garden. Her mother had a 'mother's allowance'. She recalls that neighbours would help each other.
