He recalls that he immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1930. They were detained for 18 days in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as he and his sister had measles. His father went to Winnipeg were he was accommodated by the Lutheran Church, his family followed but his father had passed away in the meantime. The family went to Shellbrook, Saskatchewan where his aunt was living, and a sister was born. His mother was alone with 3 children, Benke was 6.5 years old then, his sister 4 years, and the younger one was a baby. His mother later remarried another ethnic German who had a farm in Saskatchewan.\nBenke sent to school for 7 years, finished grade 7. From the age of 15 onwards, he helped his parents at the farm. There was a severe drought but they were better off than many people in Southern Saskatchewan who were moving with their wagons northwards. In 1939, they had a good crop for the first time, and prices started to increase due to the beginning of WW II. In 1945, they moved to a new farm near Shellbrook, Saskatchewan. Benke started farming on his own in 1949 and got married. In 1956, Benke went to Edmonton and started to work in refrigerating and air conditioning. He recalled that he founded his own company. In 1992, he retired. His wife passed away in the same year. He remarried and divorced afterwards.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58636/file/132827#t=8.0,813.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58636/file/132827/index/52265/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"churches","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"death","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"droughts","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"farm life","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"immigration","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"internment","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"step-children","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58636/file/132827#t=8.0,813.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58636/file/132827/index/52265/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Lutheran Church","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"measles","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"WW II","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58636/file/132827#t=8.0,813.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58636/file/132827/index/52265/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Immigration, voyage, detention","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58636/file/132827#t=813.0,1357.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58636/file/132827/index/52265/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Benke recalls his voyage to Canada by ship.
