Was born in village Zalukva in city Halych on December 11th in 1925. Mr. Petrash came to Canada at the age of 13. He came with members of his family (in 1939). On March 1st, they left their home village and arrived in Canada on April 1st. They travelled through Poland (Gdansk) and England. In Canada, they arrived in Halifax. The father was very worried as it was cold, and he did not know what was expecting them in the new country. Mr. Petrash has been working in Kingston; there were only four Ukrainian families. He was working with Irish, Scottish and Italian people at the restaurant who was owned by a Greek. They ate baked meat and pies at the house of his striiko where he lived during the first period (two years)  after arriving in Canada. \nIn 1942 he started working at the restaurant. Cooking was the most comfortable occupation to do in the context of new language surrounding. In the year 1942, he has been earning 20 dollars a week (ten hour working days), which was a reasonable payment, at the same time working at a factory would bring about 15 dollars a week. The queen came with her husband, two children and they drove through the city in a cabriolet-car.\nAt the beginning of his time in Canada, he did not celebrate many Canadian holidays. Halloween was observed, children loved it: they dressed up with self-made costumes, collected candies and some money from people around.\nNew Year was observed when he exchanged letters with his parents in Ukraine and wrote them about celebrations in striiko‘s home. \nIn their spare time, the children went to the park and played soccer, baseball, hockey and skated. Children of different nationalities played hockey together: English, Irish, French, German, Italian and Ukrainian. Many people thought that he was French because of the name Gerald. His friends were also of different nationalities; he had some language difficulties at the beginning.
