They had a wood burning stove that winter which they had to gather firewood for.\n\nHe went out to work in the summertime. He worked on a farm with horses, pigs, and cows. He milked cows and separated the milk. One time, he was left alone on the farm and he had to milk 23 cows by himself by hand; he was 15 at the time. He took care of the cows, pigs, and horses. They talk about the plants in his garden: cucumbers, potatoes, etc.\n\nHis parents moved back to Steinbach because they had made friends there and likely wished to stay there. Dave thinks they moved to Coaldale because they thought things would be better, but they must have not liked things in Coaldale, so they moved back. Dave stayed in Coaldale because he figured he could do better in Coaldale than Steinbach. In Manitoba, it was a one-room school. There was a stove at one end, heated with wood. In the morning, the teacher was the one to kick the ashes out. Dave thinks the school went to grade 12, but he didn't go that far as he had to work.\n\nDave speaks low German, but spoke high German to his kids. They spoke English after their child came home from school crying because nobody spoke German. Dave says two languages is good enough for them. Dave didn't learn much English in Steinbach as everyone there spoke German. He learned from school and from working in Coaldale. His parents never learned English as they could always speak German in Steinbach. He talks about church services in German.
