We called it Indian summers.\nWife: Do you remember a nice sun set?\nWhat were unhappy times?\n(No answer.) Hard to define.\nSad times?\nWell, my father was killed by a boar, that's the first death in my family.\nDo you think you parents were happy in Canada?\nNo, I don't think so. They found the winters too cold.\nDid they ever talk about going back?\nNo. I don't think so. I think they realized that...They didn't have it too good but there were opportunities here in Canada that were not in the old country.\nWife: And people didn't have the money to go back. They spent all their money to come out.\nMy father worked out somewhere, maybe in some bush camp. The climate was bad there.\nWhat about your grandparents? Do you think they were happy in Canada?\nDid they ever tell you anything about the old country?\nNo, not much. There was no future for them in the old country.\nDo you have any special memories of those times?\nNo, I can't say.\nWife: Well, you should tell about your school years from grade 10 to 12, you were in Vegreville and your mum used to bring you food.\nWife: Once a week, she would bring up some pierogis to keep the boys alive.\nThat part I want to forget.\nWife: That was in Vegreville, it was in a shack, they did really struggle, it was  a great hardship to send your kids to school.\nWife: You paid probably rent for a little shack.\nWould you like to add anything?\nNo.\nAny stories, anecdotes?\nWife: You would remember when we got married in 1948, that's a different time. We had some nice experiences in our life, we used to go camping. We used to camp in Jasper, and Banff sometimes, sometimes we went to B.C.\nI got a month special leave for 20 years of work. In that month, we went to Vancouver Island, and we lived in a tent for a whole month. And then we went to Washington State, and it was entirely a month. In a whole month, we had only two days of rain. It's miserable if you're living in a tent and it rains.\nWife: We forgot the cook stove. Until we had gone to Vancouver, we had to eat out, and then, when we got to the island, my brother had an extra cook stove. I had to go back to cooking.\nDid you like to live in a tent?\nWife: Well, there was no other way, wages were so low, I don't think you were even earning a 200 dollars a month then. You really had to struggle financially. The started with apple and orange boxes, we had the table, we had the stove. They didn't have everything all at once. It took almost 55 years to accumulate a little bit.\nWife: During the war, everything was rationed. During the war, you couldn't just go and buy a stove or a table and chairs. You had to buy other things with it in order to get it. The stores were very clever, they didn't sell just one item, they wanted you to buy a few other things. We had to get the stove and the table at a time. You only bought what you can afford. It was really tough.\nDo you think life was easier back then, or now?\nWife: No. There is so much available, and if you have the money, you can buy it but really in a sense of worrying it wasn't easy. Then, we worried about WW II.
