When he was about 10, his mother had made a homestead in Canada and had her children brought over from France. Because he had music training, he would sing in church. He would sing mostly in French, but also in English.\n\nMarie's family didn't tell a lot of stories. There were stories her family didn't tell, like about the war or Marie's grandfather, and Marie says she didn't dare ask. Marie's family would go to dances. In winter, those dances were house parties: everything would be moved outside to make room for people to dance. They did this a couple times per week. There were waltzes, foxtrots, square dances, polkas, and others.\n\nMarie's family got their first radio when Marie's father traded a cow for the radio. They had a very poor neighbour with a bunch of children and no milk, so Marie's father thought he'd help them out by trading them the cow. The radio was poor and the battery had to be recharged. Marie liked western music, but her father did not. He liked opera and classical music. On Sunday afternoon, they would listen to classical music while her father sat in his rocking chair.\n\nMarie's father tried to teach her trumpet, but she wasn't very good at it so she didn't keep it up. When Marie got a little older, she could play a little bit until she had to get false teeth and couldn't play anymore.\n\nApart from the Christmas concert, there were no plays in Marie's community.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58568/file/132607#t=9.0,346.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58568/file/132607/index/52470/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"dance","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"music","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"radio","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"singing","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58568/file/132607#t=9.0,346.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58568/file/132607/index/52470/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Languages, neighbours, friends","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58568/file/132607#t=346.0,581.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58568/file/132607/index/52470/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Marie's first language is French and Marie's family spoke French at home. Another neighbouring family, the father was Russian and the mother was German. Marie was friends with the children from the Hungarian family, but they didn't go to school together.
