He grew up in the Annaheim district, St. Peter's municipality. He stayed two years in Humboldt and then moved back to the farm. His family came to Canada in 1903 and settled in Humboldt. Asked where his father was born, he names a place in Germany (Eilscheid - poorly audible) but he doesn't know how to spell it. As the borders have changed during WW I, the place is now in Belgium. Braun's mother was born in Leavenworth, Minnesota. Braun hasn't lived anywhere expect for Humboldt and Annaheim. He retired to Humboldt more than 20 years ago. In the late 1920s, he stayed in Humboldt for 2 years when he went to school. He got to grade 8. He spent his work life mostly in farming. \nBraun grew up with his mother, his brother, and two sisters. His family purchased only staples at the store: salt, pepper but no flour: They traded wheat for flour. On the farm, Braun's family had hogs, cows, chickens and turkeys. His father was cattle buyer and used to go to Winnipeg every two weeks to buy and sell cattle. His father died on one of his trips home. The interviewer says that she is sorry to hear that.\nBraun's mother did domestic work. She was also in charge of the garden. He and his older brothers took care of the fields.\nAsked about clothing, Braun recalls that most of the time he wore just shirts and overalls. In the wintertime, he wore an aviator cap with straps that shields against the cold. They always had a suit and a tie for special occasions from the age of about 9 years. Before that, they had short pants. The interviewer asks if it was like canvass, Braun says yes. The house was poorly insulated, so they had a lot of stoves to keep it warm. The fabric on the bottom was to protect the walls, and it was the style of that time. Braun suggests that the interviewer must have seen that in some buildings herself. They celebrated on Christmas Day. There weren't any Christmas traditions typically German.\nEaster was celebrated with an Easter dinner after the church service. His older brother with his family would visit. They had Easter painted eggs, they were boiled with onion peels.\nThe interviewer announces that she has a list of holidays and will asked whether or not they were celebrated. Braun recalls that birthdays were seldom celebrated. He doesn't remember having a birthday cake as a boy, only after he got married. His birthday is next week, the interviewer congratulates him. Dominion Day was celebrated by sports events in Middle Lake, Saskatchewan, and \"it was a big affair\". All the young people would go to that. Thanksgiving was not celebrated, not in their church. Halloween was also not celebrated. New Years was a big day for them: There was always a New Years Eve dance. Braun recalls that the parish feast day was celebrated but he can't remember what day it was. There were many young people in the area, not far from home. She specifies that she wants to know in what kind of buildings. Braun recalls that dances were held in dance halls. (He shows a picture of such a dance hall.) Annaheim and Lake Lenore (Saskatchewan) had very good dance halls and good music. At that time, they had a very good orchestra in the area. There were different musical instruments (drums, saxophones, a piano) but no guitars. Braun danced mainly modern waltz and foxtrot. He practiced every dance there was at that time. It is not like now when there seems to be only one beat.\nAsked about what music he listened to, Braun recalls that it was mostly big band music. At the schoolhouse, they had violins. There was a foresters' orchestra, and they played all over. They were four brothers, they played at \"The Bessborough\" (hotel) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and at Manitou Beach dance hall. Braun himself never played any music. His mother played piano. They always had a piano but he never took any lessons. His mother didn't have time to give him piano lessons. He names a few of them. They had big families. There were lots of people within 10 miles, every quarter of land had a farm on it. Asked about his friends, he also names a few. It was the sons of the neighbours. They would play hockey together on a frozen slough, or went to dances together. They did fishing and hunting, they liked to shoot rabbits and gophers. It was a lot of fun for Braun to take his 22 (caliber pistol), go to the bushes, and shoot rabbits and gophers. He would not sell the furs, nor would he eat the meat. They would feed the meat to their animals.\nAsked about his mother's friends, Braun recalls that it was primarily his mother's sister and sister-in-law.\nApart from hockey, Braun played a little bit of baseball. Braun stresses that there were a lot of sports days in the summer time, every Sunday and every Wednesday. Every district had it's sports day, and they would try not to interfere with an adjacent district.\nBraun liked to go to lakes for fishing.\nIn his community, 99 percent of the people were German. There were some Englishmen but not many, he doesn't know any in his neighbourhood. He states that he really doesn't know. He thinks that his maternal grandfather over-invested in the USA and was in financial troubles. His father worked in (inaudible), Minnesota, as a \"bustle carrier\" (?), and Braun's mother was his girl friend. They got married in Canada. His father wanted to go back to the US but he didn't have money, so he stayed in Canada. (Braun laughs.)  The reason was that his father was a business man, he didn't really like farming. Before that, his father had a trade business in Humboldt and that's why Braun was born there. His father delivered grain, oil and coal.\nBraun says that his parents' settling in the Annaheim area was a \"religious deal\". The colony started from St. John, Minnesota. Many priests were sent from there to Canada to start Saint Peter's colony in the Annaheim district. The reason why so many ethnic Germans settled there was \"through the religion more than anything else\".\nAsked about his German heritage, Braun recalls that \"it didn't really mean that much to me\" because they spoke English at home. He has visited Germany since he retired but he didn't get to his father's home place which he regrets. He says that Germany is a beautiful country. He thinks that it was important for his parents that he knew that he is German.
