She was 3 years old when her dad came home from the First World War. She remembers a tall guy in a uniform coming into the house and her mother said that is your papa. She had never even seen him before.  In 1928, they came to Canada. Two weeks by ship. Her father died as a result of the First World War and her mother got remarried to a Clayfelt. There are four Clayfelts who are her half brothers and sisters. She got married to [Johnny Nebo] first and then to Ted Ortman. They had Irish neighbours, so she learned English quick and is now more comfortable in English. She grew up in the Annaheim, SK. She was born in Oldenburg, Germany. Her family came straight to Saskatchewan when they came to Canada. Her family came for the land. They had lots of cows. They bought their groceries with cream cheques. They were always happy and there was always enough to eat. In Germany it was so crowded. She would rather live in Canada because it's home to her. Her parents were born in Germany as well. Her husband was also born in Germany. She lived in Germany, Annaheim, and Humboldt. She had a stroke and dates are hard for her to remember. For Sundays, they often ate pie. Kids would get cake in their lunch for school. They also ate fruit. They made lots of pudding too. Cake was usually white cake or chocolate cake. Cake had raisins. There was a store where they could buy baking powder, sugar, salt, cereal, flour. But often they took their wheat to the mill and they ground it into flour. They produced meat, egg, grain. They had pigs and beef. They grew and canned beans, carrots, beets. Meat was also canned. Talks about working together with neighbours. They made sauerkraut. When you can meat, you have to cook it on the wood stove for 3 hours. People would sing and dance when they got together. Christmas meal was always turkey, dressings, and pie. Christmas was a big day. They made Christmas cookies with icing sugar on them. They did a lot of patching and sewing too. It wasn't a good time in Germany. They sent letters but they couldn't say much because the letters were opened. When they talked about Hitler in Germany they needed to look who was around them. Her mother wrote to her sister and mother very often. Johanna herself didn't write much. She would call to her cousin in Germany. They only wrote in German. Her cousins came from Germany to Canada. Germany is a nice place to go for a visit but it is very crowded. In Canada, she went to dances when she was younger. They were held at the hall in Annaheim, Humboldt, Muenster. They weren't held too often. They would listen to music. They had plays in Annaheim. She never participated, she wasn't interested in it.
