In 1944 he was called up to the army, spent three months there. When he came back, he became a telegrapher. In 1945, he got a job on the north end of the railway line, then moved every several years for work. Got married in 1949. He spent 17 years in Smoky Lake and then lived in Fort Saskatchewan until he retired. His parent came to Canada in 1898, his dad was from Snyatyn, Bukovyna. Many people from this village emigrated to Canada. His mother's family came also from Ukraine in the 1920s, probably from place near L'viv. They came because they had \"chorna bida\" (very poor). There were six of them in the family, so though they considered education to be important, it was not a good time for it. So, the children started to work rather early. It was a high school in their area, up to grade 12. Usually those who wanted to be teachers or a lawyer finished grade 12. School education was in English only, Ukrainian lessons were offered after hours but he never took them. Almost all his teachers were of Ukrainian background. They insisted on English but did not punish students for speaking Ukrainian. George came to school knowing a few words in English only.
