He spent 3 years in the army from 1942 to 1945. Albert's parents came to Canada in 1904 and landed. They both came from Brittany, France. They came to Prince Albert by train before a team of horses took them to Saint Brieux. A priest in France told them there was almost free land to be had in Saint Brieux. Albert thinks that if the people that had freshly arrive had money to go back to France, they probably would have. A lot of people from close villages in France came to Saint Brieux. Both of Albert's parents were born in Brittany. Albert's wife was born in Saint Brieux.\n\nAlbert lived in Chilliwack for 2 or 3 years while he was in the army and a little bit of time at the Suffield experimental base in Alberta. They tested various chemical weapons there.\n\nAlbert went to grade 8 in both English and French. Albert's was a big family and when they were old enough to work, they worked. He has 2 younger siblings that finished grade 12 as they were the privileged ones. Albert enjoyed school, though he didn't like one of his nun teachers that would pick on Albert. There was a convent in town. There were 3 schools in Saint Brieux and so 3 teachers had to teach grades 1 through 12. Albert's favourite subject was Health, though he also enjoyed French (which he has some rewards for). Albert can still speak French. It was a logging camp. He worked in that bush camp when he was 16. On his first night there, he and 2 others tried to get a room at the hotel, but it was full. The temperature was -30 or -40 outside and they weren't allowed to sleep on the floor of the hotel. So they found a barn without horses in it and had to walk around all night to keep warm.\n\nAlbert felled trees for awhile and later cut up the logs in a sawmill for awhile. When he left the bush camp in April, he had 110 dollars in his pocket. They lived in wooden huts at the bush camp. It wasn't too clean, but the food was good. The camp was 40 miles from the nearest town and the food was brought in with trucks. Albert was in the same camp every year as he got along well with the foreman.\n\nAlbert had a heart murmur, so he couldn't enlist in the army, but he was called up. He was in an engineers camp in Chilliwack, British Columbia and then some time at the experimental station in Suffield, Alberta. A lot of what went on in the base was top secret, though Albert can talk about it now. In Suffield, they were experimenting with bacterial warfare. They got a shipment of bacteria from Brazil and one of the officers forgot to close the window on something so temperature wasn't maintained and everything in the shipment died. It was a very expensive mistake. Albert mostly worked in keeping the animals on the base alive. There was a poisoned bullet which could kill an adult horse after 5 minutes. They were also supposed to test mustard gas and blister gas, but conditions weren't good enough for those tests.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58541/file/132522#t=353.0,753.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58541/file/132522/index/52544/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"armed forces","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"chemical weapons","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"logging (forestry)","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"occupations","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58541/file/132522#t=353.0,753.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58541/file/132522/index/52544/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Siblings, meals, food purchased, food produced and preserved","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58541/file/132522#t=753.0,1164.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58541/file/132522/index/52544/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Albert grew up with his parents and a bunch of brothers and sisters: they were a family of 11. They had lots of eggs and chickens, too. At Christmas, they had chicken. Albert's mother made a very good dressing which was often talked about.\n\nFrom the store, Albert's family would purchase flour, sugar, salt, pepper, baking soda, yeast (for making bread), and everything else was farm grown. Potatoes, carrots, cabbage, peas (which were canned) were all produced on the farm. Carrots were stored in sand to stop air from getting at them which also kept the carrots moist. Eggs were preserved by burying them in grain. Albert's family butchered their own meat. They had an ice house that was dug about 8 feet down in the ground and it was lined with ties from the railroad. They would put ice and sawdust into the ice house which would last through spring.
