(He mentions his birthplace, but it's not understandable.)\nHis family came to Canada in March 1927. They settled in Margo, Saskatchewan. His parents were both born Dolní Bojanovice, Czechoslovakia (actually, it was Moravia, Austria, then). His wife was born in Pembroke, Ontario.\nIn 1940, he lived in Long Lake, Ontario, and during the war in Toronto.\nHe finished grade 8, later he finished high school. In school, there were a lot of Czech pupils. None of them knew English. His favourite subjects were mathematics, geography and history.\nHe recalls that they were lighting up a cigarette in the bushes but a teacher spotted them. They were punished.\nIn winter 1941, he worked in a mine in Sudbury, Ontario. Later he worked in an ammunition factory in Toronto. His father would later work at a telephone company in the village of Margo.\nHis mother worked a lot in the garden.\nPsovsky describes how his parental home looked like. Many people had log houses. Their house wasn't a log building but also made out of lumber. They had three bed-rooms. His youngest brother was 11 years his junior. He shared his room with the middle brother four years younger than him. The two girls had another room, they were born in the 1930s.\nThe house didn't have any insulation. It was built around 1920. For that time, it was a good home.\nThey didn't have too many decorations. They painted over the wall paper. They had a wooden floor. His parents lived in that house until their retirement. They didn't receive any toys. One time they got toys from a Goodwill store. They had a Christmas concert at school.\nHe had always some problems with speech as well as hearing problems. Now he has a hearing aid.\nHe can't recall any specific Czech holidays. She would sing only in Czech. His mother would tell him a lot of stories. His made a family tree, and most of it was based on his mother's stories. His mother would also tell stories about the bogey man.\nThey built a hall in 1940. Twice a month, there was a dance on Friday evening. It wasn't allowed to dance after midnight. They had an orchestra hired. They weren't allowed to drink alcohol, so they went out to the bushes, had a drink there, and went in again. But they had to be careful as the police was watching. The police would confiscate an open bottle as evidence and put the name of the drinker on it.\nHe describes a traditional Czech dance.\nThey got a battery radio in about 1936. He describes the batteries in detail. They tried to save the batteries. He recalls different radio programs. He liked Cowboy stories. His brother was the only one in the family who played a musical instrument.\nMargo put on an 'amateur hour' on the radio once. Performers from Winnipeg or Regina or even New York went from town to town. The latter learned English faster than the Czechs. Only at grade 5 or 6, the Czech pupils would speak English to each other. The Ukrainians were in a similar situation as the Czechs.\nIn high school, he took some German but he couldn't speak it.\nWithin about two or three months in school, he was able to communicate. There were 35 children in their school.\nThey had good relations with their neighbours and they had to rely on each other. People were honest, he didn't know what a lock was before the war.\nHis best friends were his cousins and two other boys. They didn't have any special friends. They would get in trouble together. (He is joking.) They played softball and hockey.\nHis parents' friends were mostly Czechs but they didn't have any very special friends.\nHe used to go to the Czech hall. The Czech were the smallest group. Originally, British people dominated. They were 'remittance men'. He knew a few of them and describes their lifestyle. There were Scandinavian and German, the Czechs, Poles and Ukrainians came later. There were also some Romanian families there. He knew one, the man worked on a railway track.\nPsovsky doesn't know how to define his identity. He grew up in a multinational community. Everyone stuck together. The British gave the impression that they looked down at the others. They made the others feel inferior.
