And usually, we had an egg in some form, and bread and butter, and coffee I guess and cacao for the children, or just plain milk more than anything else that we had.\nThe noon meal - well, we had a lot of soup because we lived on a farm, we had chickens. A lot of our soup was out of chicken. Vegetables or home-made noodles. And some form of meat and vegetables.\nWhat kind of meat?\nUsually. Chicken was a very popular meat dish, and in winter, or in the fall and winter, we had beef, a bit of pork. And then, once in a while, we had turkey or geese, not very much in the way of duck, because that was very fat type of meat. Not anyone in the family liked anything that greasy. And for beverages, it was pretty much the same we had for breakfast.\nAnd the evening meal, I could be not really a duplicate of the noon meal, but we also had pyrohy (Ukrainian dumplings), now and then, it was very popular with cheese fillings, that was the protein we had, and vegetables again, depending on the time of the year.\nAnd for desert, we didn't do any larger amount of baking, it was mostly fruit, you know, either evaporated or fresh fruit, or whatever it was. We looked forward to that.\nWhat kind of fruit did you have?\nWell, the evaporated fruit - apples, prunes, raisins, that type. And once in a while, it could be apricot, it depended on what time of the year it was and what the stores had on their shelves. And the beverages, again, was pretty well was the noon meal was. And for the children, it was milk. We liked it, we had always supply, and that was the answer to that.\nDo you remember what you ate on Christmas Eve?\nOh yes, it was a special day, a special meal. It was meatless. Both my parents were very religious, and they believed in the 12 dishes, we always observed that. Do you want me to list that?\nYes, if you remember.\nI don't know if I remember them all but, just to start with the kutia, and then we had probably borshch, then fish of course, was a very important item at the Christmas Eve meal, some vegetables. And again, we had special bread.\nWhat kind of special bread?\nThis was kolach.\nI don't remember what items we else had, but there were all 12 of them, the usual procedure.\nDo you know why there were 12 items?\nYes, to honour the 12 apostles.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Partial Transcript"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546#t=267.0,778.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546/index/51973/annotation/10","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Christmas","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Easter","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"meals","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546#t=267.0,778.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546/index/51973/annotation/11","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"babka","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"borshch","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"holubtsi","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"kolach","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Kutia","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"paskha","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546#t=267.0,778.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546/index/51973/annotation/12","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Groceries, shopping, clothing","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546#t=778.0,1306.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546/index/51973/annotation/13","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Kay Keschuk recalls what groceries they were buying at a store as well as what kind of food they produced themselves. And again, we had special bread.\nWhat kind of special bread?\nThis was kolach.\nI don't remember what items we else had, but there were all 12 of them, the usual procedure.\nDo you know why there were 12 items?\nYes, to honour the 12 apostles.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Partial Transcript"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546#t=267.0,778.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546/index/52024/annotation/31","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Christmas","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Easter","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"meals","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546#t=267.0,778.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546/index/52024/annotation/32","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"babka","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"borshch","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"holubtsi","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"kolach","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Kutia","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"paskha","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546#t=267.0,778.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546/index/52024/annotation/33","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Groceries, shopping, clothing","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546#t=778.0,1306.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58915/file/133546/index/52024/annotation/34","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Kay Keschuk recalls what groceries they were buying at a store as well as what kind of food they produced themselves.
