He grew up mostly in the Tolstoi area and Winnipegosis area. His family came to Canada in 1898, by spending three weeks on a cattle boat. His family moved to Tolstoi in 1943. Both of his parents were born in Poland. Father died when he was 3 so he doesn't remember him much. His mother lived to be 84. Has 3 brothers. Stan’s wife was also from Tolstoy, Manitoba (second wife), first wife from Gilbert Plains, Manitoba (married for 50 years, passed away from cancer). He also lived in Dauphin, Manitoba and then lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba since 1956. He has grade 8 schooling. He was a boiler maker by trade. Apprenticed 5 years. Laid him off after they started putting oil on the track. Gave him work driving and maintaining tracks. Then became a boiler inspector for buildings on the prairies and railways. Biggar, SK to Thunderbay, AB. Growing up, he lived with his mother. He started working when he was 16. Cream of wheat was their staple for breakfast. Sometimes if they could afford it, they would have porridge for breakfast. Would kill pigs in November and would eat it throughout the winter. Wild rabbits and geese and prairie chickens were eaten too. They didn’t eat fancy. Had goose on the holidays. Apple pie for Christmas and wheat. Would go carolling at Christmas as well. Speaks some Polish, but his mom always spoke Ukrainian to them. She spoke both but would teach them prayers in Polish so when he is praying he does not always know what he is saying. Lived in an area where the five neighbours all came together from the old country. Bought teas and sugar from the store. Mother made coffee with barley herself. Would sell calves or wheat. Had five or six cows that they could sell cream. They had mostly homemade clothes. Mother would buy sugar bags and would dye them brown and would make him shorts and underwear with them. Father died when he was young. The house was decorated with white wash. White wash it for Christmas and Spring, inside and out. The floor was pine. Holy pictures were on the wall and family pictures. His mother did sewing, embroidery, knitting. She had a spinning wheel.
