She recalls what her rural school looked like. The students first had to make a fire to heat the building. She had to walk to school. They had no well at home. They used to play games like 'Fox and Geese'. When they arrived at school in winter, the lunch was frozen and they had to heat it up.\nSauve had three children and grew up in a family with three children. She left home in about 1940.\nAsked about her ancestry, she hesitates to answer. Her mother was German. Her father was born in Russia but came to Germany during WW I. They lived about 30 miles from the closest store. Her father had a car.\nThere was a creek on their land and she would fish together with her mother. They smoked the fish in a smoke house built by her father. They also had an ice house.\nAs her father was in the lumber business, his clients would pay with meat for the wood (during the Great Depression).\nHer mother baked bread. She had to cook also for her husband's hired men. Their fuel was mostly wood as they were far from a coal mine.\nIn the grocery store, they purchased only flour and sugar. They picked wild fruits (berries).\nTheir first radio ran with on batteries, they were the first in their community who had one. On Saturday evening, people would gather at their home and listen to different programs.\nHer chores included looking after the garden and helping her mother with washing and cooking. They had no school uniforms. She thinks it is better to have school uniforms in order to avoid discrimination. They had a lot of very poor people in their district. Her mother would give things to neighbours as some of them had hardly enough to eat. Many people lived off fishing.\nSauve describes the house she grew up in: It was a log house but very warm. The walls weren't plastered. They had family pictures at the wall, photographs of her grandparents in the United States. Her mother was the only one of her family to come to Canada as she got a job in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Her mother was cooking in a hotel. Sauve's mother did a lot of sewing, knitting, and crocheting. It was a community get-together. She recalls a few dances. Someone played a violin or a guitar. She herself also used to play the guitar a bit. She can't remember any stage plays.\nHer mother boarded the school teacher and would get only about 20 dollars a month. They were the closest to the school, so they boarded him. The first one was an older person, the second just came from university. The teachers didn't get paid very much. Two years ago, Sauve showed her old school building to her adult grandson who was appalled. She would have liked to continue schooling but she couldn't afford it.
