She remembers, that the mother was very depressed, probably because she was realizing that she was seeing the relatives for the last time. Her mother died in 1984. Both her sister and her were trying to help their mother when they could. The mother used to cook pyrohy with sauerkraut. As their mother was moving to Canada, her original plan was to earn enough money to bring the rest of the family there as well, however, the financial situation was so difficult, that she could hardly earn enough money for herself. She spoke broken English. Her mother called the basement suite a cellar and criticized it as the daughter moved there when she got married. The father died when she was only 54. There used to be a miner´s picnic arranged at the Park Lake every summer arranged by the miner´s union. These picnics were a lot of fun for the families and the children loved them a lot. Men were drinking a lot during these celebrations. People usually ate chicken, cabbage rolls, perogy and generally not too many vegetables. Pastry was also usually prepared and there was also a lot of bread. She was lucky, that the school got a new bigger building when she was a pupil, also it was exciting, that they became access to the books, pencils and crayons. She loved to learn in the school. There were no streets at that time in Shaughnessy, only the sidewalks, in general it was a safe time. There were some decorations in the school prepared for Christmas, the teacher was rewarding the children with stars for good work. Her favourite subject was English.\nShe spoke Ukrainian until the age of four, later they started talking mainly English at home. Children spoke English with father and Ukrainian with mother so she grew up bilingual. In school the teacher spoke only English. Children at school were Ukrainian, Hungarian and English. Her sister and her were planning to take additional lessons in Ukrainian to improve their knowledge and being able to speak to their relatives in Ukraine, but somehow, it did not happen. She did not do sports because it was not represented at school. However, she remembers some games she used to play with children. Earlier she was dreaming about going to New York, having her own car and her own house, these were the three goals and dreams she had since her childhood and all of this became true. Her children gave her money for a trip and she chose to go to Minnesota and visited casino and many other places. She was very excited going there and is grateful to her husband and children. The interviewee says, that at her opinion everybody is responsible for his own life and people should not blame anyone else for their lives. \nRemembering her childhood, the friendly community and her good friends. When they were children they used to play various games and she remembers a very friendly and good atmosphere overall.
