He grew up in Foisy, AB until 1944 and then dad moved to a farm near Edmonton. His dad came to Canada when dad was six years old in around 1913-1915. Then he came to Lake Eliza, east of St. Paul. Later on, they moved to Foisy where John was born. John's father was born in Ukraine. Probably on Polish territory, John cannot remember where exactly. Mother was born in Canada in Thorhild, AB. All the work John did was done in the city. He finished grade 9 and did not go to high school. He worked in a slaughterhouse. In the summertime, there was also gardening, peeling potatoes. Before school they had to milk cows. Girls typically stayed in the house, but they did not have boys old enough in the family. So, they all went to pick up stones in the field after Dad seeded. They had two horses and a flatbed rack, so they did it.\nFather: looked after the farm but also worked in the ministry, a superintendent of Ukrainian affairs in Western Canada. So every Sunday he was out for the ministry. He did a lot of work on farm but when John reached 11-12-13 years old,  John took over and the farm. It  became his responsibility. This is one of the reasons why he did not attend high school. \nThe first house was a two-storey. Bedrooms were upstairs, kitchen, dining room and Dad and Mom’s bedroom were downstairs. The house was quite big, with regular furniture made of lumber. They had regular beds, kitchen table, benches.\nThey did not do crafts apart from the Christmas decorations for Christmas tree. \nThey were religious. Because his father was a minister, they used to go to the service in his uncle’s house and later to a church in St. Paul. On Sunday they went to different churches across Alberta. They used to get up at sunrise and also went to a service, but they did not bless their food in church.  At home, they prayed every time before the meal. For birthdays, they always had a birthday cake and sang “Happy Birthday”. And received some kind of a gift, whatever they needed. As for Dominion Day, they always remembered it but on the farm you cannot really celebrate it, and it was no possibility to go out for celebration. Thanksgiving day – yes, they always celebrated. As for Halloween – it was not really something to celebrate. They used to go from door to door to get candies, but it was not a holiday, especially for people who go to church (because of the pagan origin of this day). Kids just go from door to door, and are given candy, or an apple or orange. A lot of Ukrainians. \nHis daughter collected information on family history, a family tree but never published it. He doesn't have a lot of old photographs, except for a picture of his Dad and Mom’s wedding. \nRecommendation for interview: his cousin.
