Seniw's mother baked a beautiful bread with raisins for Easter, and add something to make it yellow. They always had a baked pork, she still likes it more than ham. They had Easter eggs - her mother cannot do them but we would buy some Easter eggs from a neighbour. And the priest would come - on Saturday evening or Sunday - and blessed a basket. \nBirthdays - yes, they always celebrated in their family, they had a cake, her mother made it. At that time, to have a cake was something special! For Christmas Mom made a special cake with raisins, nuts and spices! It smelled beautiful! Her husband told that they never celebrated birthdays in his family! But they did, and still do. Presents - no, they did not have presents for birthdays, only for Christmas. They did not celebrate Dominion day on the farm, maybe at school... It was not a big deal. A Christmas concert was a big deal! they did not celebrate Thanksgiving or Halloween at home but they celebrated Spasa - Ukrainian holiday. At school they made some hats on Halloween in school but not at home. Pumpkin craving came later. \nFor the New Year, her brothers learnt some verses and went to neighbours to greet them. Anything like Malanka - no. My mother remembered all the church holidays from Ukraine even without the calendar. On Christmas all of them sang carols, kids and parents, many of them. There was another man - a great storyteller - so her brothers used to visit him to listen in the evenings, when the work was finished. Dances - they had a national hall in the 1930s, people built it for concerts or lectures, or so on. They also danced there, and she went there and her brothers too. It was popular among people, they came there from afar. But chores still had to be done, so they did not go to dances too often. They danced Ukrainian polka, valses, the same we have now. They had classes on Ukrainian dance. Music was performed by violin or harmonica. Guitar and piano came later. And - they had radio, it broadcasted all kinds of music. They also had radio at home but later, they listened to stories.
