She lived in Pocahontas, Alberta until 1921. Then she lived on the farm, 15 miles north of Waskatenau, Alberta. At 16 he went to Waskatenau to get her grade 11, then she came to Edmonton, Ottawa, New Brunswick, Yukon, Namao, AB, Rivers, MB, Quebec, Red Deer and back to Edmonton. During the war she worked in the supply room of the hospital and then unemployment insurance and then the US Army air force flight operations. After the war, her job finished so she moved to Ottawa. Then when she was married her husband was in the air force so they moved around a lot. \n\nHer grandfather and her mother came to Canada when her mother was 12 years old in 1907. Her mother was born in Galicia, Austria. Her dad came when he was about 18 years old in 1907. Her father was born in Zavalia, Galicia, Austria.\n\nHer husband was born in New Brunswick. His ancestors have been in Canada for over 300 years. On Christmas they had the usual Christmas Eve (Polish and Ukrainian) dinner. No meat, you had fish, wheat cinnamon buns. Josephine has trouble remembering the specific items but things you didn't have normally were had on Christmas Eve. \n\nFrom the store her family purchased sugar, coffee, and tea. They grew the rest. They had a really big garden. There was never a shortage of potatoes, turnip, beets, carrots, etc. You had them from one year to when the next crop came up. They even sold potatoes, but only potatoes. They had beef, pork, turkey, chickens, duck, everything else you could have. They had their own sheep, so mother would spin the wool and they would all knit mittens, socks, and sweaters. Mother did a lot of sewing. There were 2 girls a couple miles away that she would sew clothing for them. It was a very simple style with a plain bodice and a gathered skirt. Boys just had sweaters and pants were usually bought. Style was more or less the same, just the fabric would change. Mother started to buy patterns in the early 1930s. She started in the garden pulling up weeds and hoeing pretty young, around maybe 7 or 8. You helped out and you played, but then gradually you did what needed to be done. She remembers a time when her mother was int he hospital for several months, and she an her sister took turns staying home from school, because they had a brother that was still not in school. They did what needed to be done. They were 13 and 14.5. They baked bread and did laundry. \n\nWhen her father first came to Canada he was a miner. He worked in Pocahantas, AB. In 1921, he moved to the farm, and that's what he did for 14 years, before he died. When they moved to the homestead there was nothing done. They had to buy a house and a barn and clear the land, fence the property.\n\nHer mother came to Edmonton and worked as a maid in a home. When she was married she did the house keeping and farming. She worked in the garden, milked the cows, separated the milk, fed the chickens and the birds, whatever needed to be done. She doesn't recall when the siding was put on the outside, but it was sometime in the 1930s. Until then it was plastered inside and outside with mud and then white washed. They had a corner shelf where they had a nice sized clock that would ring out the hours, with a cloth for decoration on the bottom. They hung curtains as well, but Josephine cannot remember when they did that. It was not like that at first. The only church they had was when a priest would come from another church and there was mass in neighbours' homes or the school. Usually only happened 2-3 times per year, until 1939 or later, when a church was built there. Her mother was Roman Catholic and they were all baptized in the Roman Catholic Church. They celebrated both Christmases. They had different baking which was really special. Mother would make new clothes for them, when they got older they made the clothes. They went to Christmas concerts at different schools around the area, in December. In January, they didn't have a Christmas tree, which they did in December. In January, they would visit with aunts and uncles. There was a bachelor that lived just half a mile away, and Josephine's parents would invite him and his father to their house. The same people came for Easter. The bachelor's dad would tell Ukrainian ghost stories. They found 3 days of holidays in January to be quite long. Easter they coloured simple eggs. They had special cinnamon buns, fruit perogies, etc. They would play games together. The northern lights would be jumping all around and it would be a nice night. They also play these games throughout the summer months. Her brother went Halloweening, but the girls never went. She doesn't know all the stuff they did. They played tricks. There were New Years dances for the younger people. They did social dance and had an orchestra. In the 20s it was in the schools. Then they were in the community halls. They went to the Skaro church on October 15th for the pilgrimage. People came from all over the place. It was about 30 miles from their place. Her grandparents would invite people from the church over for a meal. They had an event in summer and that is when the men would play ball and women would play softball. On May the 24th there was a holiday where they would plant a tree at school and then they would plant a tree at home. Her family sang always in English. Just the usual songs from the radio. They didn't have lessons for singing or instruments. In her family they went to dances. Started going at around 15 or 16. They went to Darling Hall, Garden Park Hall, and others. They would also have dances in a granary.  They did waltz, two step, square dances, etc.  There was a piano, accordion, violin, drum, guitar. She never played any instruments. She liked the music on the radio. That was what was usually played for dances as well. She was fond of listening to the Happy Gang. No one in the community put on plays. They had plays at school for the Christmas concert. Christmas concerts were very popular, people went to several schools in the area. They had songs, drills, plays, monologues, poems, dances. There was a big variety and usually they were very good. The teachers were very dedicated to having the children involved in all these things. Josephine participated in them. In Pocahontas there was a mix of nationalities. She had no problems speaking English when she started school. Her mother spoke Polish, but she did not. When she spoke Ukrainian, she would fill in the words she didn't know with English. It was all English spoken in school. Until 1939, her closest neighbours were her uncles. They also had some English neighbours. Josephine discusses some of the people in the area. Waskatenau was the nearest centre. Everything was there. In the city, you would go for tea and have your teacup read. They went rollerskating and to dances with friends. Played the Fox and the Hound, only played in the winter. She explains the rules. They would slide down a hay/strawstack. Josephine describes other games they would play.The community had Ukrainians, English, Scottish, Polish, German, Norwegian, Finnish, Belgian, American. Describes her community like a little United Nations. There is a book with the history of the district.
