His mother came to Canada in 1902 from Bessarabia. Orville isn't sure when his father's side of the family came to Canada, but they resided in Beausejour, Manitoba before Orville's father came to live and work in Medicine Hat. His father was a mechanic and mechanically minded. He found work on Orville's grandfather's farm where he met Orville's mother.\n\nOrville considers his ancestry to be Canadian. His family moved into Medicine Hat proper in the early 1920s. Orville finished grade 12. He worked in broadcasting all his life in Medicine Hat in 1946 after getting out of the navy. He was an announcer before moving into production and sales. He eventually became manager and part owner of a radio station and television station. Orville has never lived anywhere besides Medicine Hat.\n\nOrville was married, but is widowed now. He remembers the friends he had at school. At school he became very interested in music and was placed at a number of music festivals as a boy soprano where he achieved many first and second prizes. He learned how to play trumpet and joined a dance orchestra and managed to make between 12 and 15 dollars a week making him the richest kid on the block. They would play Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and they made anywhere from 3 to 7 dollars a night. They played at the Moose Hall which was on 5th street, but it is gone now. When the war started, Orville joined the navy. When the war was over, he got out and got into broadcasting.\n\nOrville lived with his parents and did not have any brothers or sisters. Chickens were brought into Medicine Hat by farmers and his parents would purchase them from the farmers.\n\nFrom the store, Orville's family would purchase everything from the store. Meat from the meat market and groceries from the grocery store. Orville can't remember whether his family produced their own food. His mother baked bread and put down pickles. During summer, when vegetables were prominent, she would can them.\n\nAt Christmas they would typically have turkey with dressing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, various types of vegetables, and for dessert they would have ice cream, sometimes with apple pie.\n\nFor clothes, Orville would wear pants and shirt, with a heavy coat in winter. They always had a Christmas tree. At the school they used to sing carols or songs, and a minister came to the school once to talk about Christmas.\n\nOn Easter, Orville would look under his bed to see if he had been left any Easter eggs. They also went on a hunt for Easter eggs with his family. Orville's family never had a special dinner at Easter. His mother was the one that would make Easter eggs. She hardboiled them and painted them with paints from a grocery store or a drug store.\n\nBirthdays were celebrated. They would go out for a meal, give presents, and invite people over for a sing-song.\n\nOrville can't remember if Dominion Day was celebrated, but he thinks it was. He thinks they would buy fireworks and set them off themselves. He wishes it was still called Dominion Day. There was no parade.\n\nThanksgiving was celebrated with much the same foodstuffs as Christmas.\n\nOn Halloween, Orville and his friends would go out with pillowcases and look for the houses with the better goodies. They would be out for about 3 hours if it wasn't too cold. They mostly received apples and other fruit, but they would get candy and popcorn balls. He remembers some pranks that were played. Some houses still had outdoor plumbing, so they would push over the outhouses (but made sure nobody was in them).\n\nNew Years was celebrated much the same as it is celebrated today. Orville says he overindulged in whiskey on New Years when he was older at age 15 or 16. When he was very young he had to speak German to his grandparents because they couldn't understand English, though they did learn English later on. He never took any other language lessons.\n\nNeighbours across the street had a barn where they raised bucking horses. Another family was a woodworking family. There were a few retired farmers, as well. There was an electrician and a retired RCMP officer. There were also railroad workers that lived across the street.\n\nOrville's best friend is named Ernie Block and they're still friends today. They lived a block apart. They would play ball, hockey, golf, and music. They were in an orchestra and a band together.\n\nOrville's father was friends with the people he went into business with. His mother would often have coffee with a neighbour down the street. Everyone kept to themselves, at least on Orville's block. He says they minded their own business, and nobody bothered one another. They would socialize at church functions.\n\nIn Orville's neighbourhood there were people of Italian, Scottish, English, Czech, Norwegian, and Indigenous descent. He says that interactions between the different groups was very friendly. No one collected a family family history to Orville's knowledge. Orville remembers his father taking Orville out to where his grandfather homesteaded and showing Orville the first house they built which was made of mud and straw. He wanted Orville to see the house his grandparents had lived in.
