The heating was provided with the help of coal stoves, the gas lamps and oil lamps were also available. They had an outhouse on the farm. They used to have some kettle, used to preserve meat by smoking and did it mostly over the wintertime. Many of this was sold, they did a lot of exchange (meat for groceries). Slag coal helped to preserve ice preventing it from melting.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58682/file/132961#t=0.0,539.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58682/file/132961/index/52158/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"carpenter","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58682/file/132961#t=0.0,539.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58682/file/132961/index/52158/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Meat smoking","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58682/file/132961#t=539.0,791.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58682/file/132961/index/52158/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"They used spice brine, prepared fire and kept it small, there was a lot of smoke and it took several days to get it prepared. It was a two-room school, in the first room there were pupils from grade one to five and in another five to ten.\nThey had a school inspector who used to come around and check on students and the teachers. One inspector whose name was Oscar Williams always used to recite the same story standing in front of the class, this is what he remembered. In the school, they had to play different games (throwing rocks against the wall, played catch, etc.).Their plays were usually played by both girls and boys. Remembers that all the children who were in about the same age were friends with him. The interviewee remembers, that English and Scottish boys did not like playing with him and other boys who were foreigners and stayed together. It was not before the age of fourteen-fifteen that they started to mix and communicate together. His best friends were Japanese boys. \nHe is proud of his nationality. Sports helped him to define his identity, he started boxing in the 40ies. The thirties were \"the meager years\" full of struggle, the forties were better as they started making money and they were able to buy better machines for the farm. He was thinking of himself as a Canadian. When he went to the United States he always used to say that he is a Canadian. His heritage is Ukrainian but the nationality was Ukrainian. His father's family was Polish. He identified his heritage as Ukrainian because his parents used to speak Ukrainian and not Polish to him. When he tries to speak Ukrainian it is always mixed with English, for example, when he wants to say \"car\" he says \"hara\". One of his friends was speaking only Hungarian and he understood some of the words from the expression but also because he remembered how Hungarians swore on the field in Hungarian.
