He went to a country school from beginners to grade 10. Rosemary school. Walked barefoot, two miles each way. Took his grade 11 and 12 in Hafford (boarding). The day after he graduated he took off for Toronto, to go on a haying excursion. Paid to work on the farm for a month. Felt discrimination due to his accent. He had trouble finding a job because of it. He took night classes in Toronto. Was in Toronto for two years. Called back to the farm, because his brother left. He took over his parents farm in 1950. His father passed away in 1936. His dad left his mother in 1932, ran off with another woman. He went to Vancouver and got sick. Left his mother with 12 kids. Oldest was 19. He and his twin sister were the youngest. His oldest sister was in charge of the family. He doesn't remember his dad leaving. He came in 1935 when we was sick. He remembers the funeral. First time he went to town he was 10 or 11. \n\nMom and Dad lived with grandma. House had 3 rooms. Bedroom, kitchen and living room. They had an inside pich. When his parents built a home it was plastered with more rooms. Maybe about 4 rooms and a cellar. Furniture was bought from Eaton's. As a boy, there were icons in every room with scarves decorated. They didn't have a tapestry. Taras Shevchenko and Ivan Franko also hung on the wall. Mostly kept geraniums in the house. Was heated by the \"bayshtok\" with wood and then later they got a wood and coal furnace.\n\nFirst they built a house, then a barn, then a summer kitchen. The summer kitchen was maybe 300 ft from the house. They had a few granaries, an icehouse, a pich. They had a well in the middle of the yard, also about 300 yards. Good drinking water but was not plentiful. They had cornmeal and puffed wheat, mostly puffed wheat. Took lunch to school, but this is very emotional for him to talk about. Other kids had peanut butter sandwiches and he had lard sandwiches and cottage cheese. The other kids made fun of him. Even his cousins. Because they knew they were poor. When his dad died, he had an uncle that wanted his mother to give the kids to an orphanage. He is quite emotional talking about this. They ate mutton, potatoes, chicken soup, pyrohy, holopchi. His older sister and mother prepared the meals. The other kids helped out. They preserved meat by smoking and salting it. They canned the meat as well. They started canning in the late 30s. Dairy was preserved in the ice house or down the well. They had a cream separator. They didn't preserve eggs because they used them to exchange for groceries. They drank milk and made cottage cheese. They later sold the cream and would get maybe a $3 for a 5 gallon cream can. They made their own butter. Baked bread once a week but made 12 loaves at a time. At the store they purchased flour, sugar, salt. Just the basics. Made lots of Saskatoon Berry jam. They kept pigs for butcher, and sheep. Preserved cucumbers and cabbage. They were all important. \nLent was really observed. On Good Friday they didn't eat anything. During Lent, on Wednesday and Friday it was meatless. Good Friday was a complete fast. They would go to some of their relatives. They went by horse and buggy. They went to the Pysklivets Church which was 4 miles from their house. They had another church, a Catholic church, before this one was built. It had a hall across the road. Mother used to go every Sunday (when there was church). The Pysklivets Church was built in 1911. That's where his mother is buried and his three brothers. This church was moved to the Museum in North Battleford. They still have provody at the cemetery, south of Hafford about 2 miles.
