His father came to Canada in 1908. He does not know exactly when his mother came as she never talked about it. He recalls that his mother \"missed the Titanic by one hour\": She was going to travel to Canada on the Titanic but was one hour late to get it, so she traveled on the next boat. Klymchuk's mother moved to Bellis because her relations were there; his father didn't come to Bellis until 1917. His mother was married before, she knew the family she was going to. In 1917, there was a flu, and his mother's first husband died. Klymchuk's father worked for the CPR, building roads and tracks, and met his mother in 1918, and Klymchuk was born in 1919. His mother had three sons from her first husband.\nKlymchuk left Bellis in 1941 and joined the army. He spent six weeks in Camrose, Alberta for training before he joined the artillery and was sent to Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was shipped to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he learned everything about anti-aircraft guns. He was supposed to go overseas but the Japanese fired three shells at Albertville, and they had to teach recruits coming from Calgary, Alberta, everything about anti-aircraft training. He did that from 1942 on for six months, and then he was asked what he wanted to do, and Klymchuk wanted to go back to the artillery. So he was sent to Calgary which was his artillery home at that time. After that, he was sent to Suffield, Alberta, and took anti-gas courses. There were also experiments with gas. Klymchuk stayed there until 1945 when he got married in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He lived there from 1945-9, then he moved to Ralston, Alberta (added by his wife who is present during the interview) where he stayed for 13 years. Then, he had to make a decision. They had a boy and a girl, and he had to decide whether his daughter would to have to ride the bus to school (to Medicine Hat). So he bought a house in Medicine Hat in 1962 (the year is added by Klymchuk's wife).","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133004#t=0.0,497.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133004/index/52115/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"armies","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"half-siblings","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"immigration","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133004#t=0.0,497.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133004/index/52115/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR)","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Spanish flu","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Titanic (ship)","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133004#t=0.0,497.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133004/index/52115/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Education","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133004#t=497.0,682.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133004/index/52115/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Klymchuk finished grade 12. His wife states that they ate \"meat and potatoes\". Klymchuk continues: They ate a lot of chicken. For breakfast, they ate a lot of porridge. There was a flour meal in his home town, where they had their wheat ground. For lunch, they often had left-overs from yesterday. For supper, they would have chicken, pork or smoked meat. His mother made a lot of soups, she threw in everything, not only potatoes but also different kinds of vegetables.\nAt Christmas, they had a Ukrainian Christmas Eve dinner: no meat, twelve meatless dishes. On Christmas Day, they had turkey, chicken or smoked ham. He recalls some of the twelve dishes: wheat soup (kutia), fish, perogies.\nAsked about what groceries they purchased at the store, Klymchuk's wife states that they purchased only coffee and flour. Klymchuk intervenes: They did not buy flour, only sugar, coffee, salt and pepper, vinegar. In general, they bought very little. They had their own flour and baked their own bread, they also had their own milk and made their own butter.\nKlymchuk always wore coveralls and rubber boots. When he went to church, he wore new pants, a new shirt and coat, and changed when he came back.\nKlymchuk recalls that he did not have a suit until he was 16 when his uncle took him to Edmonton to buy one (he got some money from his father). His uncle knew exactly where the Jewish businesses were. It was Saturday. Klymchuk found a nice suit for 19 dollars and 95 cents. The shop owner told them to come on Monday morning to be the first customer, they would get a reduction on it. The Jewish shop owners always wanted the first customer that comes in on Monday morning to buy something because if the first customer would not buy anything, they expected a poor day. The Jewish shop had everything on sale on Monday morning. The problem was: Everything what had been on 24 dollars, went up to 28 dollars, what had been on 19.95 dollars went up to 24 dollars. His suit went up to 24 dollars. His uncle said he would pay only 18.95 or not take the suit. The shop owner said that he is a hard bargainer. It was 24 dollars.\nAsked why the went to the Jewish, his wife answers: \"Well, that's all there was.\" Klymchuk explains that \"if you want to buy something cheap, you go to the Jews' store\". Klymchuk's uncle was \"well-advised in everything\" as he went there quite often. Klymchuk wore that suit to church and changed it immediately when he got back. They wished the farmers a good year. They used only a handful of grain so that they did not cover the floor. Nothing was done on December 31.\nKlymchuk states that \"the English\" changed the calendar for two weeks, it was not done \"by officials\".","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133005#t=0.0,414.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133005/index/52114/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Christmas","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Christmas carols","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"dance","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"New Year","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133005#t=0.0,414.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133005/index/52114/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Easter","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133005#t=414.0,670.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58694/file/133005/index/52114/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Klymchuk's wife recalls that they dyed Easter eggs which is corroborated by Klymchuk. Looking at the egg, Klymchuk explains how they are made. They used to plant onions in January or February in the house. At Easter, they had homemade sausage and bread which was put in the basket together with the Easter eggs and taken to church. Klymchuk reminisces about the blessing of the baskets. The church service was in the morning. The people gathered at the church, there was a lot of food: Noodles, perogies, wedges, sausages, kovbasa (Ukrainian sausage), and whiskey, homemade whiskey. Then they said shinny. The feast days consisted of eating and singing, all Ukrainian songs. Pokrova on October 14 was the most important feast day. After the service, people assembled at somebody's place.\nKlmychuk states that he saw his neighbours quite often because he stopped the horses and walked to the fence and talked to them when he passed by. Once in a while they invited people, a couple, they played the violin and the accordion. \nAsked about whiskey, Klymchuk recalls that the only thing they could buy was beer but not canned beer but in barrels. The describes different gallons (unit of measurement). They also could buy beer at the hotel, they had one hotel and several stores in Bellis. Klymchuk describes the interior of a grocery store in Bellis. For 5 cents one could get a lunch. People would stop there when they were taking a box of grain to the elevator. For 20 cents, they got half a loaf of bread, a sausage and a bottle of pop. That was a lot: A box of oats was sold for 7 cents a bushel.\nWhen he was 12 or 13, he picked strawberries and took them to town and got 35 cents for them.
