When they came they came right to Edmonton. Her mother was a young lady when she came west. They came separately, but were both born in Ontario. Her father's family is from Ireland. She doesn't know where her mother's family is from. \n\nDuring the war she was in Hamilton, Ontario. She also was in Bedford Basin, during the wartime. The rest of her life she has lived in Edmonton. If they were lucky they got dessert. Dessert would be strawberry shortcake, but it was very rare. Her mother also made spotted dick pudding, but she didn't like it. They ate it anyways, because food was hard to come by. Her dad had beehives so they had honey. She considers herself lucky in this way. At Christmas, they had a traditional turkey with all the trimmings. She doesn't remember what they bought at the store in the 1930s, but she has a book that recorded what she spent on everything the 1940s. She remembers getting bread on Whyte Avenue and talking the milk bottle to get milk. Having food was a luxury. Her mother did a lot of canning in those days. Made soups and baking cookies. There weren't a lot of chores, just keep tidy. Her father was a tailor with a shop on Whyte Avenue. He took orders for men's suits. Her uncle had a drug store near there as well. There is an area of Edmonton named after her father and grandfather, the Lendrum Area. \n\nHer mother was a seamstress. In Ontario, she did intricate ladies dresses. She worked on the Richard's block of Whyte Ave. She didn't work when she was married. Then she just did it for friends and family. Christmas was a happy time. They would get together with aunts and cousins. They had lots to eat at Christmas. They shared Christmas gifts. She got a scrapbook one year where she kept pictures and write ups in the paper. They had a Christmas tree. She remembers a friend that would have real candles lit on the tree. They used to skate a lot. Mostly their entertainment was sing songs and games. They sang old time song like Annie Laurie. On 104th street and 76th ave there used to be a big seating place and they would have gymnastics and races and things like that going on. In the Flats, by the high level bridge, they had the Maypole. For Thanksgiving, they celebrated it but it's not prominent in Lillian's mind and she doesn't remember too much about it. For Halloween, they went out and got apples. They had a mask, but that was all. It was safe to go door to door, in those days, She went with her sister and her friends. She remembers people dumping over outhouses. New Years she remembers going to her Uncle's place. A big group went and they had a great big horn that would make a noise at midnight. They had communion at church but no saint days. They didn't celebrate Remembrance/Armistice Day. They did square dancing, waltzes, fox trots. They would go maybe once every 2 weeks or once a month. It was at the train station off Whyte Avenue. Lillian started going to dances around 16. She was part of a club. Her first husband and her used to dance a lot. Then after her second husband died, she did competitive ballroom dancing. She talks a bit about the music they would dance to. He had a beautiful garden. Mr. and Mrs. Vogel were Germans. He worked as an engineer at the brewery around 103/104 street. Mrs. Isabelle Durant was a teacher. Yuriy's (?) were nearby. Mckee's were close, they had two boys and two girls. She used to play basketball with Ruth. Her best friend was Ruth. Ruth's father was English, from England. They were \"churchy people\". They went to evening services, bible study, etc. Lillian's family didn't go. With Ruth she would go for little hikes, have tea parties, stuff like that.
