They had their own meat, milk, or flour (once milled). Her family made their own flour. Alice's family never had more than 8 cows. Alice knew her paternal grandfather well: he visited them and they visited him. She would also visit her maternal grandparents in Redwater, but that was harder to get to.\n\nAlice remembers moving into the new house and her uncle helping to carry stuff. The house she grew up in was demolished and Alice regrets not taking her kids to see it. The last time she saw it was 1977.\n\nWhen going to school in the summer, the teacher would let Alice sleep on her desk as she was tuckered out from the heat. Alice started school a few months before she turned 6. School went through summer since they couldn't guarantee a teacher during the winter. Once they got old enough, they stopped going to school so they could help on the farm. There were 7 of them on the farm. They were never hungry, even during the hard years during the 1930s. They also had sour milk (which Alice's children didn't like).\n\nOn Christmas, they had traditional meals. Alice names some of them. Her mother's family made borscht, her uncle Mike's family made sauerkraut and split pea soup. They had browned gravy, pyrohy, potato, prunes, dried foods, and other foods. In 1927, when Canada was 60 years old, they had an Irish teacher who had all the kids go to Lamont, where celebrations were being held, and they walked in the parade. Her class won an award for their display during the parade. Alice remembers the teacher's name.\n\nAlice's family did not celebrate Thanksgiving or Halloween.\n\nNew Years was celebrated on the 14th of January as it was a church holiday. Once they switched to the Gregorian calendar, they switched to January 1.\n\nThey celebrated parish feast days like the Exultation of the Holy Cross.\n\nAlice's family celebrated all the saint holidays. The church made beeswax candles.
