She immigrated to Canada in 1925 with her family and lived in Meadows, Manitoba, for most of her life except for when she was teaching in a number of places like Broad Valley and Morden, Manitoba, and Leamington, Ontario. Later, she taught in Abbotsford, BC, before moving back to Winnipeg, Manitoba.\nBoth her parents were born in Russia. She never married.\nAfter finishing public school, Braun was sent to Springstein, Manitoba, because her mother wanted her to learn at least some German. She and her sister Tina had to keep the upstairs clean. Her brothers would always work on the farm. Milking was usually the women's' job, only in wintertime the boys would occasionally milk the cows. Braun's brothers looked after the horses and took the animals to the pastures. They also renovated the barn and fixed the machinery. In winter, they would fix the harnesses of the horses. They wouldn't have any tractors prior to WW II.\nBraun's mother would knit and crochet and direct the household. With ten children, she had a lot of mending to do. She would also knit stockings for her daughters.\nThe older girls worked in the city in order to earn money to pay off the farm. There were only about two girls at home. Braun's sister Mary worked as caregiver for people who were ill or who had a baby. They also prayed every evening.\nBraun also describes how Christmas was celebrated in her family. If it was too cold to go to church at Christmas, their neighbour, Mr. Ens, would come and read out of the bible.\nOnce, peanuts hadn't been available, so they bought a hundred pounds of peanuts on Christmas morning. She was very afraid that she wouldn't find a job. City schools wouldn't take young teachers, so she went to the official trustee which sent her to a school in Broad Valley, Manitoba. It was a Ukrainian and Polish area, and the people she was boarding with didn't speak English. Braun learned some Ukrainian and some Polish because she had to make herself understood. The people she lived with had only three rooms: one for her, one was the kitchen, and upstairs was a bedroom.\nShe had to teach for 38 children, grades 1 to 8.
