Nellie's husband joined the army in 1941, but was discharged in 1942 for medical reasons. However, he managed to get a job immediately in the city. Due to low prices on produce, farming meant a great deal of hard work with little payoff, so they moved to the city where Nellie had a sister. Her husband was able to keep steady work from then until the day he retired. Nellie said that rent was cheap at the time (she says $20 per month on rent) and goods were also cheap. Nellie says that schools were shutting down and she wanted her children to have an education. There were schools in the city, so that also informed the decision to move.\n\nNellie says they could barely support themselves on the farm. They could feed themselves with what little produce and meat they made, but anything extra could barely be sold due to low prices. So moving to the city was an easy choice as it was a better income.
