The school inspector went to their farm twice in order to bring him back to school but his father refused. His brother Fred finished only grade 7 and wasn't interested in school. His sister finished grade 10.\nHe describes the social contacts of the family: Whereas his parents socialized mostly with Ukrainians, he had friends of other nationalities too. He played with girls, too, but not hockey. They would play games like sack race.\nSometimes, they attended picnics organized by the Ukrainian Association in Lethbridge. There was a Ukrainian hall, too.\nHis parents would read English as well as Ukrainian newspapers. They had a Ukrainian newspaper from Winnipeg.\nThe family had also relatives in Edmonton but wouldn't visit them too often.\nHe remembers that his mother was send money to her sister in Ukraine which she put in an envelope.
