Alvin's father's parents came from Germany while his mother's parents came from Minnesota. Alvin's wife was born in Humboldt. Alvin has also lived in Romance, Saskatchewan, though the town is no longer there.\n\nAlvin completed grade 9 for schooling. School was alright, according to Alvin. School was 3 miles away and he would have to walk to school when his father couldn't spare the horses as they were needed in the field. Alvin took grade 9 by correspondence, but he would go to school and the teacher would help him with it. He lists some of the subjects that were taught in school. Alvin didn't have a favourite subject, but he did like arithmetic. At recess, they would play ball. They didn't have enough boys to form a baseball team, so they played ball with the girls. He describes a game they played in the spring and fall called \"Mook\". He thinks other schools played that game as well, but perhaps not as much as his school.\n\nAlvin has worked as a welder and in machine manufacturing. He worked for that company for 32 years.\n\nGrowing up, Alvin lived with his parents, his 3 sisters, and 3 brothers. Alvin was the second oldest. They were a fairly close family.
