They settled in Ste. Elizabeth, a small community southeast of Morris, Manitoba. His father was not a farmer, but they received land on credit. He attended a one-room school until grade 3 before he moved to Winnipeg to continue his education. His father became the leading minister of the first Mennonite church in Winnipeg. During the war, Enns took the position of a conscientious objector and worked in a mental hospital from 1942 to 1945. He worked for 24 dollars a month and the salary would go to the Red Cross. However, he never thought of himself as being poor. In Winnipeg, too, everyone in his area (Alexander Avenue) was at the same humble economic level. He had five brothers but as his parents were very frugal, the family was never dependent on social welfare. In the summer months, he helped his uncles who had stayed on the farm. He recalls the moment war had been declared. His parents were very nervous Another problem was that they had difficulties mastering English as their basic language of communication was German. He is very grateful that his parents had come to Canada.\nDuring the Depression years, soup kitchens were organized by the Mennonite church. Later, he went also to Ethiopia and China to deliver cattle. He received his degree in arts and education and taught for two years, then he went back to university and became a social worker. As he became well know for his social activities (e. g. organizing foster parents for children), he became also involved in politics and was elected three times to the parliament and became a member of the House of Commons. He talks about the Diefenbaker minority government. As the government didn't last, he had to move his family back from Ottawa to Winnipeg as he couldn't be sure to be re-elected. It turned out that he was re-elected in 1963, but his family stayed in Winnipeg. MPs had train tickets, there was no plane arrangement. In 1968, he was defeated. He never served a full term. He states that some 20,000 Mennonites left Russia in those years. He grew up in Ste. Elizabeth until he was 9 years old, then they moved to Winnipeg. His father was hired by the Mennonite congregation to be the minister for a mere 75 dollars a month although he had 7 children. Prices were quite hight then.\nIn the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, Enns' family lost their property. There were some Mennonites in Canada who made arrangements with the government to have their co-religionists accepted as immigrants. The CPR allowed all these people to come on credit, and the travel debts were been paid back only after the war. They had six horses, and even at the age of nine, he already used to drive horses. They also had chicken and worked on separating milk from the cream. This was done manually, and the cream was put into milk can. Usually, they had a weekly shipment of cream, and they earned cash for this. As a child, he used to write letters to Santa Claus before Christmas and everybody got the Eaton´s catalogues. People used to order clothes through the Eaton´s catalogue since it was very convenient.  It was an excellent service since not all people did have cars and the time to go to the city. When people went to Winnipeg, they also went to the Eaton´s department store as it was the place to go. Mennonites also liked to meet there. Eaton´s provided a big waiting room where people could meet and wait for further transportation. Also, the Eaton´s catalogue was the only toilet paper they had at that time. \nThe houses had inferior insulation, and the water froze overnight. To prepare breakfast, they needed to make a fire. Despite all difficulties, they ate pretty healthy diets. Canning was very popular at that time; people used to preserve meat, fruits and vegetables. Gardening was essential since they grew a lot of vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, beans). The whole family participated in canning. The absence of refrigeration was a big problem since they had difficulties transporting the goods. Transportation with horses was also not easy, and they needed to use a box (which did not fit a lot of grain) and two horses. The grain merchants were sometimes pretty ruthless and wanted to pay less, using various arguments like that the train had too many weeds in it. The people like Mr. Enns´ father could not argue since they did not have the language skills for this. Sometimes the farmers ended up with pretty little money for their work. It was helpful when the wheat board came in and participated. They also used to sell the animals; the husbands usually participated in this. People also used to plant and later cut the trees for fire. There was a lot of work with chicken on the farm.
