She was there until she got married in 1949. She then moved exactly 9 miles West from her home, on the same side of the road. Her husband was born in Lake Lenore, Saskatchewan, in the bedroom he slept for 68 years. In 1991, they moved to Humboldt, Saskatchewan.\nHer father came to Canada from Germany when he was 18 years old, he was born in 1890 in Vilshofen (probably now a part of Rieden), Bavaria, Her mother was also born in Germany, close to the place were his father was born. She can't remember the name of the place. She was born around 1908 and came to Canada at the age of 2. Her father married her mother in 1925. Her father had been married before but his first wife had died in the flu epidemic after WW I. Some teachers had only grade 12 themselves and didn't have any experience. One teacher was younger than one of a student. There was a lot of fluctuation among the teachers.\nShe recalls that the students had to memorize word by word.\nShe had to do a lot of chores at home, and there was little time for homework. Once she was punished by a teacher and was bleeding. She wouldn't tell anything at home as her parents would side with the teacher. She would only tell it her father a month before he died at the age of 89. She recalls that she milked the cows when she was five years old. Her father always wanted her to be a stenographer as she did all the paper work for him. She had 13 siblings. Her sister would stay in the hospital for six weeks to two months. Luckily, she survived but a hole in the forehead remained. Now, at the age of 78, her sister gets head aches.\nBeside milking cows, she had to feed the pigs. In the 1930s, her father couldn't afford to drive the car anymore. As there were no boys in the family, she had always to work with her father. She hated to go to church with a dress because she was so used to the pants.\nThey had 22 horses and a tank were water was boiled for the cattle. When it was very cold, she took a coverall of a hired man and put it on. Her father was surprised but would buy slacks for his daughters.\nShe recalls threshing on the farm and at neighbours' places at the age of 13 for 28 days. They missed school for two months.\nHer father promised her and her sister to pay but in the end, they got only a winter coat for 5 dollars. After school, they sneaking into the smoke house and ate a piece of meat.\nThey didn't celebrate Christmas, they didn't even have a Christmas tree. There was no paint, it was calcimine. Her father smoked, so they had to whitewash the walls in the spring and in the fall. They also had heavy wall paper. They had a lot of family pictures on the wall, her parents' wedding picture as well as a picture of her paternal grandparents in Germany. They never had a camera, so there were no pictures of the children.\nIn the wintertime, they would do some embroidery, and patching and sewing. Her two older sisters did all the sewing for the family, dresses as well as pants.\nSchemenauer recalls how big the family was. In 2003, she lost two of her siblings and her husband. Two brothers-in-law and two cousins also passed away in that year. They were singing on the way to church and on the way back.\nThey would also celebrate Saint Nicholas' Day on December 6th. They would get some candies.\nAt Christmas, there weren't any gifts anymore for the elder children.\nShe describes how Easter was celebrated. Her mother was deadly sick on the ship. His father enjoyed the trip, he came with two brothers. Her father heard from the teacher that there is a lot of room in a foreign country called Canada. They went to the United States first.\nSchemenauer recalls that her mother was illiterate because she was sick all the time. Her father read a lot but all in German. His father's brothers and father would send him a newspaper from Germany. Later, his first wife would translate the English newspapers into German for him. Her father would always correspond with his relatives in Germany. Five of her cousins died in WW II on the German side. The sixth died after being released from a Soviet prisoners' of war camp. Out of her uncle's seven children, only the daughter survived.\nHer uncle from Germany would write her and she was going to go to Germany but then her father died and she cancelled the trip. Her husband was sick (he had nine heart attacks and two cardiac arrests) and she couldn't go. She recalls the death of her husband in detail: She told him to come to bed and realized only later that he was dead. When she didn't want her children to understand she would talk in German with her husband but he would answer in English. He would take it to neighbours and they would dance together (in the winter). Even people in their 70s and 80s would still dance.\nIn school, they would play softball.\nSchemenauer recalls that there were also some Scottish neighbours as well as people from England and Ireland.
