The fountain dates from the 16th century but has 1876 engraved in the stone, the time when it was remodeled. The fountain’s pediment is decorated with a sculpted plaque representing a character in prayer, probably Saint-Guen. The name of the parish “Guen”which means white/holy originates from the presence of an ancient cult of a female solar deity that was later likely christianised as Saint Marie Madeleine. The Sabbaths of Saint Guen were described by the monk Maunoir as those in charge of fighting superstition. At 11pm, torch lit groups of gentlemen, pleasants, priests, beggars, children and elder folk congregated around a megalith or the fountain, presided over by a man or woman dressed as a goat, promising happiness and wealth to those who gave themself to them body and soul. To be admitted to the banquet and dances, you had to renounce God and the Cult of Saints. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThese sabbats were more than an opposition to the missionaries of the Counter-Reformations than a continuation of the Celtic cults. Whilst witch hunts took place across Europe in the 16th and 17th century, it seems Brittany was relatively spared of this practice.
