They had horses, cows, hogs, chickens and turkeys.\nHarrison recalls that he and his siblings had to do many farm chores: boys outside, girls in the house. In summer, they had to bring to cows from the pasture before going to school. The school was about three miles away, most days they walked. They played softball and \"Kick the can\" or \"Stealing Sticks\". At home, Harrison used to play with a slingshot. He was shooting at animals. Hunting was a way of life for him as there was a lot of wild game.\nAt the age of 12, he had to work with four horses at the field. The family poisoned gophers, he recalls how the poison was mixed. It was a deadly poison he was handling as a child.\nHe recalls how work differed in the seasons. Every Wednesday in July and August, there was a so-called Sports Day and a picnic took place.\nHarrison talks about what kind of machinery the family had. He recalls how his father brought grain to the grain elevator. They bought also coal for winter on that occasion.\nHarrison recalls that there was barely enough wheat to make flour. They would get 800 sacks of flour a year. They would purchase 100 pounds of sugar in the store, also some baking powder.\nThe family had always enough to eat - cheese, meat. Fruits were scarce. The family had also a large garden. Potatoes were stored in a box of sand.\nHarrison also explains different refrigeration methods. They would store milk or cream in the well. They also had an ice house which he describes in detail. They even made their own ice cream.\nHarrison's family was part of a so-called beef ring which meant that everybody would get some fresh meat when a member was slaughtering animals. However, there were some problems as people were dissatisfied with the quality of the meat they got. Harrison also talks about so-called stink meat.\nThe family sold milk and cream in town, as well as eggs and chickens.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58653/file/132878#t=0.0,1058.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58653/file/132878/index/52226/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"ball games","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"beef rings","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"chickens","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"children's games","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"chores","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"coal","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"cows","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"elementary education","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"farm chores","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"farm life","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"flour mills","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"fruits","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"grain elevators","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"grocery stores","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"horses","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"hunting","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"ice cream","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"pocket gophers","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"refrigeration","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"school buildings","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"slingshots","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"softball","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"sugar","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"turkeys","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"water wells","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"wild animals","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58653/file/132878#t=0.0,1058.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58653/file/132878/index/52226/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"\"Dirty Thirties\"","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"\"stink meat\"","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Horseshoe (game)","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"ice house","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Kick the can (game)","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Saskatoon berries","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Stealing sticks (game)","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58653/file/132878#t=0.0,1058.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58653/file/132878/index/52226/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Education, military service, dancing, Calgary Stampede","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58653/file/132878#t=1058.0,1202.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58653/file/132878/index/52226/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Harrison went to school and joined the army aged 17.
