She went to the Harmonia Country School. It was only one mile away from her farm. They had felt boots and snow up to their knees. Went to school from 9am to 4pm. On a regular day at school, they did arithmetics, writing, drew maps. Taught everything from the map at the front. They did exercises with their arms. Her school had one room, with 2 and 1 person desks. They had a big wood stove on the side. If they lived three miles from school they came by horse, so there was a barn. There was a well in the schoolyard for water. A midwife lived on the farm next to the school. Teacher had to teach 50-60 kids. Maybe 10 students in her grade. Grades 1-8 at their school. She finished grade 8. They were taught grammar, arithmetic, numeral numbers. On Friday they had to stand in a row and had a spelling match. She was really good at it. They had books, but they were supplied by the school. When she started school they had a black slate with thick red binding around it. Then they had pencils. Older grades they had ink in a bottle. They had to write straight. They bought the slate and pencils at the store. Spoke Ukrainian at home and learned English at school. It wasn't difficult. The older people at school would teach them. Teachers would stay for 2-3 years at the school. Lived at the teacherage right by the school and the neighbour lady cooked for them. She had a lot of friends at school. Children of different religions were there. They learnt Mennonite songs from the Mennonites at school. They learnt to sing each others songs. They played hopscotch, ball, jump rope. There were Mennonites, Doukhobours, Polish, Ukrainians, English in her schools. This is one of her happiest memories. They would help during the day and then play ball at night. In the 20s, her father wouldn't let her go to the fair. The boys rolled the car out of the garage, picked up the neighbours and went to the fair. Saddest memories are when her uncles and aunts died. She has a cake plate that was her mother's, a comb and hair pins that were her mother's.
