In 1928 he built a bigger building, with a general store and a post office. They sold groceries, hardware, clothing, and lumber. He talks about the economic crash in 1929 and the effects on the surrounding communities. There was an influx of new people in the area. His family came to Canada in 1900, to Ukraina, MB, to an area called Dry River. They built a church on their property in 1902. His father was eight when he came to Canada. He joined up in Ottawa. Took his basic training at Cornwall, ON. He went back to Ottawa and then worked in the internment section, where he looked after the prisoner of war mail. He also received a lot of mail through the Red Cross for transfer to Canada Post for distribution. Was in Ottawa in 1941 until October or November and then was sent to Halifax to a sub-base post office. He unpacked mail that was sent from Eastern Canada to be sent overseas. He had special duties to put letter mail onto ships which was done quite secretly. Sent to the Eastern Air Command to clean up a post office. He then went back to Halifax and was given a posting in Brandon, MB, as a corporal. Staff was 3 army personnel and 5 air force women’s division. The women did the letter part of it and the army men did the financial part. Spent 22 months there and then went to Carberry, MB. To an RAF camp, was acting sergeant. Had a corporal and a private and five RAF personnel working for him at that point. They did all of the distributing of the mail for the personnel there. He had to pick up English lingo at the camp. Spent 11 months there. Then he was sent to Ottawa and then on an overseas posting. He was on the last draft to go overseas in 1944. Got just outside of London on Boxing Day of 1944. They were waiting for posting and he picked up the daily routine orders and found out that if you are Ukrainian and you are Ukrainian Catholic or Orthodox, you could go to London for Ukrainian Christmas. He spent Ukrainian Christmas in London at the service club with a couple of hundred people. They had a Christmas Eve supper and special service. He got to see his cousins while he was there. He was then based in London at a dead letter office where there was 2 workers and one officer. Then he went to postal tracing at the Canadian Military Headquarters. Worked there at night. The daytime employees would post up to date cards and then at night he would find the addresses and send the mail on. If the letter it came from England it would be given to England for redistribution and if it came from Canada you had to have a good reason for returning the mail to Canada. If a person died, you had to get a photocopy of the cross to send it back. He was then sent to Belgium to work in the department where the cigarette section was. Cigarette mail was recorded the same as registered mail. Package 900 cigarettes per solider per month. Then he went to join the first division. First army at the time was at Apeldoorn, Holland. He met the first division there. At the Hague, they were asking for volunteers to go to Japan, he put his name in right away to go. His name didn’t come up yet and he was escorting mail to the headquarters to the line of communication office. He got hurt on his second trip and was taken by a Jeep to the dressing station, who sent him to a British hospital. They did surgery on him. He was there for a couple months and was sent to the 13th division, then joined 3rd Div Canadian.
