When he was in Winnipeg for work, he went to the music store and said, that he wants to buy a violin for his son (although he was not married and the son was not even born ). The violin he bought was built in 1885.\nThe father played violin and flute. \nIn Coleman there was already a settlement of Finlanders at the time when he came there, he could speak Finnish language as well. There were three main settlement groups: Ukrainians, Poles and Finlanders. There was a Ukrainian school in Finnish hall, professor Zavadskyi was working there, he was injured during the war. There was also an orchestra. He joined the orchestra at the age of four, played mandoline. His mother was helping with photography. Remembers his beginnings in details: he learned how to make a frame, how to cut glass, how to use the equipment. He was also interested in art work and did different experiments with pictures in his father´s studio. In the Coleman museum there are examples of this art, the people donated pictures which he and his father did for them. \nHe did the oil colouring of the pictures in collaboration with his parents.\nRemembering some experiments and tests with pictures he did earlier. The used to have a a studio in Coleman (1914-1928) and in Blairmore.\nThe colouring his family did was very well received by everybody, but they still did not charge a lot of money.\nThe Ukrainian carpenter helped to build the studio. He also used to repair violins in the photography studio. At the time of the interview he had only one sister left, sometimes he was telephoning with her.\nTo the special memories belong his participation in the music festivals which started around 1927. He used to play the songs which his grandmother was humming to him, earlier she used to say \"zahrai\" which means \"play\" in Ukrainian and he played. \nRemembering his violin teacher Mr. Moser and the piece \"Melody in C\" he used to play. He had good marks for his emotional playing. He took part in violin competitions. Remembers getting bacon once for the second place in the violin contest. \n\nMusic festivals took about two months of preparation. He remembers how they were prepared: duets, trios and orchestra were parts of the program. The orchestra started in 1926 by Mr. Moser and Mr. Optan (?) who was a cello player. He was injured during the war, lost a part of his nose and his two fingers but still continued playing cello. There were also fiddlers, his sister also played music. He wished there was something like this in sports as everybody is giving his best, but only few people get recognition.\nHe did not really do sports, but remembers playing softball.\nGot married at the age of 29 and remembers playing in the curling team this year. He never went to dancing as he was always busy in the studios. The Coleman studio was sold in 1928 because the second studio was doing much better. The customers liked the Blairmore studio more. He loved the buns which mother used to buy and put butter inside. Many Ukrainians went to the Catholic church (Italians and Slavs usually went to this church)..\nHis family did celebrate Ukrainian Christmas even being the only Ukrainian family in the area. They used to cook studynets´, hobubtsi, turkey, zakrushka (beets cut in long stripes and served with garlic), kovbasa (there was a man Dan Liashuk who usually came from Edmonton and sold it). He was a salesman and was interested in selling kovbasa quickly as it would otherwise spoil.
