He grew up in Coalhurst, Alberta, where his parents moved to in 1914. He also attended school there. In 1927, they moved to a farm. His father worked in the mine, and he ran the farm together with his mother until a mine explosion occurred in 1935. His father had cancer and couldn't work anymore. In 1932 and 1933, Zmurchyk was working for a farmer. He earned 20 dollars a month. They had a dairy farm. His work day was from 5 o'clock in the morning until 10 o'clock at night. Later, he started to work for a railroad company. He worked for 10 hours a day and earned 25 cents an hour. In 1941, he became a switchman. In 1942, he enlisted in the Canadian army and went to Alaska. In 1944, he was transferred to England and came back in 1947. He continued to work for the railroad and retired in 1978. He did a lot of night work.\nIn 1947, he got married. He has three children. He recalls their careers. His wife passed away four years ago. She had been a heavy smoke. On Canada Day, they used to go to events for entertainment. There were also fire works and ball games. They always had turkey at Thanksgiving. On Halloween, they would tip over the toilets in Coalhurst. They would play other tricks.\nHis mother would sing a lot of Ukrainian songs. She always went to the Ukrainian Hall for singing. Her mother didn't know too much English. After some time, she could read a paper, she was self-taught. Her children would talk in English and she answered in Ukrainian.\nZmurchyk can't recall any stories. His mother would tell stories him stories about doing the laundry in the river in the old country. She also told him a story that the landowner in the old country had put a sack of wheat on her when she had been eleven and she collapsed. He took music lessons from a Ukrainian teacher. He went to a Ukrainian school at night when he was about 12.\nHe listened to Ukrainian as well as to English music. When he started school, he had to learn English. He had very good marks. After that, he tried to speak English at home, too, as much as he could. His father would also talk in English as he had gone to night school in Canada. His mother never had any time to  take some additional schooling. Her mother always talked in broken English.\nIn school, most of his classmates spoke English. Some spoke Italian, Hungarian, Romanian, German. But in school, everyone spoke English. He went to the Ukrainian night school, from 1921 to 1927, after normal schooling. Only he and his sister learned to read Ukrainian, the younger brothers didn't. One of his brothers wasn't interested in it but he could speak Ukrainian. He himself would write letters to his aunt in Ukraine all the time. Now, he is mixing up both alphabets. The English were the biggest group, there were also a lot of Scottish and Irish people. The miners had their own miner's hall. His father would go to the Ukrainian as well as to the miners' gatherings.
