Sawatzky was born on April 6, 1926, in Blumenort (today Rosetown, Manitoba). His father was building a house in Plum Coulee, Manitoba, where the family started the live shortly afterwards. His attended school there. He and his sister attended two Sunday schools every Sunday (at the Mennonite Church and the Church of God). In 1938, his parents relocated to Osterwick, Manitoba. He recalls the building of the house and the establishment of the farm. He describes selling meat and other products to a store in Winkler, Manitoba.\nHis mother also kept bees. In 1943, his father got sick, so he had to work harder. In 1944, his father died from cancer. His widowed mother sold the farm and bought a quarter section of land in Whitewater, Manitoba. In 1949, Sawatzky's mother bought a house in Morden, Manitoba, where she would live with his two sisters. Sawatzky got married in 1949. They rented a house in Whitewater, Manitoba, and had a daughter in 1952. The same year, they moved to Winnipeg but moved back to Whitewater. In 1954, they had a son, and moved to Winnipeg again. They had total of five children, three girls and two boys. He praises the Harms family as his wife was a total stranger in the community when she moved to Whitewater, and they 'kind of adopted her'. Getting together with the relatives was 'quite an ordeal too'.\nSawatzky lived with his parents and two sisters. His older sister passed away last year (in 2003).\nHe calls his ancestry Mennonite but he is not sure. His great-grandfather came from Prussia, and their name is related to Polish rather than German. He thinks that their name was changed as their original name hadn't been a very popular one.\nDuring WW II, they all had to get registered due to their background. His mother was always reading a religious book with pictures. They would pray for every meal and in the evening. His mother was very religious, his father to a lesser degree. He thinks his mother exaggerated when it came to religion.\nHis neighbour lady would preach and prophesy to everyone who would come into her yard. She would predict the end of the world. Jake Harms would know her too.\nSawatzky recalls that they had to attend the Sunday schools but not the church services. Everything was in German, and the children weren't that fluent in German at that time. He recalls that his oldest children learned German, the younger ones didn't. They would say their prayers in German but not speak the language. He jokes that he is learning English. His mother couldn't speak English. His parents spoke always German at home, and some Ukrainian in the old country. His father learned English very quickly and bought English newspapers whereas his mother thought it would be enough that her husband learned the language. They lived in a 100 percent Mennonite community, they didn't need a language other than German. In later years, his mother would tell her children to answer the door.\nHe thinks that many who came in the 1920s didn't learn English.\nIn school, they had a little bit of German, the rest was English. The students would speak some German among each other too. Sawatzky's wife writes in German as her father had taught her at home.
