Her family came to Canada in 1912.  They moved to Moosehorn area,  she got married in 1931 and they needed to walk 10 miles in order to get married. After  getting married they did farming together with the parents of her husband who lived half a mile away. Later they moved to Winnipeg (in 1952) and got a new, bigger farm. Later the high school children helped them for 50 cents a day and were happy with it. Her maiden name was Kines, her mother´s name was Kaebe. Her cousins lived not far away. After the year 1952, better times came. She received six years of school education. Everybody in her family needed to work. She used to make a garden, babysit the sisters and much more. Her town was pretty religious, she attended Lutheran church. \nIn the summer they attended about 10-12 dance parties (including weddings). Flowers and ribbons were used as decorations at the weddings. \nThere was a verse in German which was used in the invitations: \"Wenn ihr habt Bier, dann bleibe ich noch länger hier\" which means in English: \"If you have the beer I will stay longer here\". Children were running around and collecting the money for the couple. The guests who could give more were giving more.\nShe loved dancing Polka and Waltzes. Every thursday men used to the play card game \"whist\", women did not play cards. They felt very disconnected without the English language. Her children were afraid to speak German at school during the WW2, they were afraid that the teacher will catch them, so they only spoke English outside of the home. Her father-in-law said, that he heard on the radio (he was listening to the short-wave radio), that Germany was doing good and they are going to win the war and he wanted to go back to Germany when it happens. Before the war they also believed, that life is going better in Germany and therefore wanted to go back. Their family members were interested in going to Germany before the situation changed. The parents of her husband came from Germany to Canada and it took them about two weeks by ship to get here. The people who came from Germany to Canada were saying, that the situation in Germany was very bad, but they did not talk much about it.  Her husband´s family immigrated from Germany in about 1943.
