In 1951, Kosmick moved to Norquay, Saskatchewan, before moving to Calgary, Alberta, in 1955. He moved back to Medicine Hat for a short period of time, then he moved to Detroit Michigan in 1956. Since October 1977, he is again living in Medicine Hat, Alberta.\nKosmick's father came to Canada in 1909, his mother came in 1928 at the age of 28. His parents had known each other back in Ukraine, and a week after her arrival, his parents married. His mother came from the same family, had very little money and no place to stay, so she married his father \"who kind of took her under his wing\". Kosmick's father was 36, his mother 28, when they married.\nKosmick's parents started in Bassano, Alberta. His father worked at the railroad and was transferred to Dunmore, Alberta. His father was transferred to Medicine Hat probably in 1931 where they bought a house. His father continued to work at Dunmore as a section foreman, and would come home at weekends.\nThe interviewer asks Kosmick whether he remembers the name of the village his parents came from. Kosmick has to think a little bit: Beleluia (Sniatyn county, Western Ukraine). He explains that it had belonged to Austria and then became a part of Poland. Kosmick's wife was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Her parents were both from Germany.\nKosmick finished high school. He worked in communication, at the telegraph office. He started as a messenger, moving telegrams. He later got a job as a clerk in the communication department, working in Medicine Hat and Calgary. As his financial standing was not great, his sister sponsored him to moved to the US. He worked as as dispatcher for a trucking company there. A year later, he switched to the shipping business (import, export). He became an operation manager, working in Detroit and Chicago.\nKosmick is of Ukrainian ancestry. His oldest sister played the piano, another one played the mandolin and took violin lessons as well. His oldest sister who played the piano won all kinds of talent contests with older ones at the age of six. His parents bought her a piano as they recognized her talent but then Kosmick's sister ended up having polio (as did Kosmick himself), and she became paralyzed and lost all her muscles in her left arm. That happened at the age of 15, and she got married very young when she met somebody from the East and fell in love. She was about 16 then. His other sisters moved out after school too.\nKosmick himself played the violin but he used to hide in the bushes and went to play baseball or hockey instead. He practised Ukrainian dance as well, at the Ukrainian hall. He started his lessons with Al Cherney (Alexander Peter Chernywech), a famous violinist who passed away a few years ago (in 1989). He has been on TV with Tommy Hunter.\nThe Ukrainian hall was located on Dominion Street in Medicine Hat, only three blocks away from Kosmick's parents' home at Dunmore Street. There were dances and lessons for the children, it was a nice place to go. There were get-togethers with other Ukrainians which his parents would attend at least once a month. Weddings were also held at that hall. The hall was a house that was re-modelled. Kosmick attended the hall in the 1940s and early 1950s. When he moved to the US and crossed the border, they asked him if he belonged to any organization, and he said no. They asked him about the Ukrainian hall that was known to be communist. Kosmick was interrogated about his activities at the hall, and eventually he was admitted to the United States and had no problems. Kosmick states that he Americans \"already knew all this\". The American authorities were aware that Kosmick was Ukrainian and that his parents belonged to the Ukrainian hall. He explains that it was a social thing: The American thought that they would hold meetings there which he never did.\nKosmick recalls that his wife is German. Germans were chased on the street and banned from walking there because they were German: \"That's how much prejudice there was back in those days, even in this country.\" As a child, he couldn't understand why someone would do this. A German name was enough to stir up suspicion, \"it was pretty bad\". Kosmick recalls the internment of the Japanese during WWII. There was also a POW camp in Medicine Hat.\nKosmick himself didn't feel any prejudices against himself as a Ukrainian. His friends he grew up with never displayed any prejudices. January 7th wouldn't be such a big celebration but they would have again a lot of Ukrainian food, and friends were invited. His mother always had people in the house. Both Christmases were celebrated in the same way. He still celebrated Christmas on January 7th, and his children still wish him \"Merry Christmas\" on that date. They don't forget it because of \"baba\" (grandma) and \"dido\" (grandpa) - his parents.\nAt Easter time, Kosmick's mother always made Ukrainian Easter eggs. They would also give some of them to friends. They ate them after a while. At Easter, his mother always made a goose, and traditional Ukrainian dishes like holubtsi, pyrohy, nachynka, kulesha and borshch. He can't remember that they ever took food to the church to have it blessed.\nBirthdays were celebrated in Kosmick's family. His mother always made a cake. Birthday gifts were mostly clothes, if they could afford them. It was always something practical, nothing foolish. It was not like today when everybody is spoiled. On Dominion Day, they watched the parade. He remembers victory day in 1945 when a plane flew over Medicine Hat during the celebration, parachutists were let out. HIs parents were happy that they lived in this country. \nThanksgiving was celebrated with a special meal. However, Kosmick's mother made a special meal almost every day as she loved to cook. His mother loved goose and duck. She also made pastries like apple pies.\nAt Halloween, there was a special event for children who met in the downtown area. They dressed up and had prizes. It was some kind of traditional thing. After that, the children went from door to door. The city organized that. Kosmick remembers that he once dressed up like a pirate. He went without his parents because \"in those days you could let kids on their own\", unlike today when parents are afraid to do that. He would do most things himself, including sport events.\nAt Halloween, Kosmick received mostly candy, popcorn balls and apples. Even some candies they got were home-made. There were also the \"penny-candies\", as they were called because they were so cheap. For a penny, they got two or three candies. There was some mischief but not such vandalism as it takes place today. For instance, they would tie up somebody's clothes line. Unlike today, they didn't do anything destructive. They also would write on somebody's window with soap.\nParish feast days weren't celebrated, New Years was. They would invite friends, and when he got older, he would go to a house party. January 14th was recognized as Ukrainian New Years but not really celebrated. He also stresses that his parents managed to overcome so many hardships. He likes the Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian dances, and he thinks that the Ukrainians are very warm-hearted, close-knit people.\nIt's especially the Ukrainian music and culture he likes. They exchanged some information on their families. Kosmick got another letter from a different distant relative in Ukraine. He explains in detail who this person is (not really) related to him. It wasn't a very nice letter, he was asking for money. The letter gave him a \"bad taste\". He doesn't mind helping someone out but in the first letter one shouldn't ask for money. That letter was in English but the first one was in Ukrainian. He has a friend who is traveling back and forth to Ukraine and translated the Ukrainian for him.\nKosmick explains that he asked his mother primarily about his parents siblings and parents. He did that before his mother passed away. He wished that he had done more but the was away for many years when he was living in Detroit. He has got even more information than his older sisters.
