It is built in a recess, so to access it you have to go down a dozen polygonal steps. There are the remains of three columns that once supported a slate roof in front of the fountain. On the day of pardon, male pilgrims would have been shaved before they drank water from the fountain. Behind the main fountain, sunk into the wall, are two other smaller fountains. At the back of the main fountain is a serene statue of the Virgin and Child. Before the revolution, the Pardon of August 15 was as popular as that of Sainte-Anne d'Auray. At the time, it was mainly sailors who made the pilgrimage. Today, this pardon is still one of the three most important in the diocese. The water from the fountain is said to cure sterile women and sick children. It is said that there were professional pilgrims who could visit the fountain and ask for a child to be cured on your behalf (Le Deuff pg 196). There are photographs of the procession which show a banner embroidered with the words “Les Emigrés du Canada”.
