There were 60 acres to work and the pay was 10 dollars an acre with gas costing 10 cents a gallon, so the money was very good. It was very hot. The seats on the combine were covered, but if they left the covers exposed to the sun, they couldn't sit down again as the seats would be too hot. The combine boiled all day, as did the water truck. The next year, Otto went down to Texas and then Oklahoma. The temperatures were very hot, but the work was so exhausting that no one had trouble sleeping at night. The wind was so strong, it pushed the front end of the Model T over. As a result, some of the boys hung onto the front of the car and called out when to turn. Dust storms were common. Grasshoppers were also very bad: sometimes there would be millions flying in the sky.\n\nSometimes things were so bad that there was no harvest.
