His mother was born in Pinewood, MB. They came to that area and homesteaded in 1934. His father was born in Ukraine. He has his grade 12 schooling. He went to Lund School, but started at Northstar. Was at Lund until grade 8. Took high school at Fairy Glen. He worked in Thompson, MB in charge of dispatching heavy equipment. Then he came home to farm and they started a pool hall business for 20 years, where they sold and set up pool tables. Then they catered for 11 years. Then they farmed until retirement. Lived with his parents growing up. He had two brothers and two sisters, he is the oldest. Then it was Julian, Cecile, Zenie, Eugene. Grandmother lived with them as well. \"Little Babka\". In 1592, his ancestry probably started in England, with the name Gordon (Gorchynski). He is Canadian first and the Ukrainian and German. He was christened in a Roman Catholic Church. There were 8 others in the family 5 boys and 3 girls. They did their schooling at the Belgrave School, which was half a mile from their home. Her older sisters were teachers at the teacherages. She went around with her sisters to their schools. Grades 6-10 took in the area. Finished high school in Melfort. Belgrave is 14 miles north east of Melfort. They went home every Friday after school and then went back to Melfort on Sunday nights. Her father was born in Ukraine. He came to Canada by boat, as a stowaway, when he was 16. He worked in Manitoba. Then he came to the Brooksby area. Her mother was born in Manitoba in 1905. Then she came to the Brooksby area. They married when her mother was 16 years old, in 1921, in the Brooksby area. Mother came from a family of 12. Dad had a brother. Mother and father sponsored him to come over after 1921. The priest would come around in May and then they would marry couples in groups of 4-6 after the service. This is how her parents got married. Brought aunts and grandmother over later.  Her ancestry is Canadian Ukrainian. They dried a lot of vegetables and mushrooms. During the war time, Phyllis' mother would trade her sugar coupons for coffee. They kept bees so they always had honey. Sugar, flour, salt, dried fruit. Watkins man came around with the spices. Canning didn't start until during the war. Early 40s they started to can meat and other stuff. You could buy canned meats like spam, sardines, herring. Peas were hard to can. They had lots of cottage cheese. Beets, corn, cucumbers were grown. The corn was early maturing. They had crab apples, sand cherries, goose berries, plums, raspberries. Phyllis' dad used to graft trees. They had sheep, hogs, cattle, chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks. They used to eat rabbit stew. They snared them because they would eat the fruit trees and oat plants. Would make a sweet and sour rabbit stew. They had a problem with water on their farm. They dug several wells. Water was a commodity. They had to dig 2 dug outs and had rain barrels. They they made a cistern. Tony owes his health and wealth to his mother. \n\nPhyllis' house was heated with wood. Fathers hardly ever slept because they were watching to make sure the house wasn't on fire in the winter. \nPhyllis' father had a hired hand that would do the chores, while he would go into the bush to get wood to fix fences, build buildings, heat the house. They were called drifters. His mother did quilting, but just out of necessity. Knitting as well, it was a necessity. \nPhyllis' mother liked to embroider, but not until the kids left the home. They didn't have much time. Her sisters did sewing. They did crocheting too. Her sister Mary was into that. \nTony's mother never made Easter eggs. \nPhyllis' siblings played mandolin and violin. Singing at the church. Her family was very active with the church. Sunday school, concerts, fundraisers, bazaars. Phyllis' family was involved with the Orthodox Church. There was service at least once a month when she was growing up. Around 1926, they had resident priests in Gronlid that serviced the churches in the area.\nTony's family was also religious but they didn't have access to a church until about 1951, when his father brought a new car. They had to travel about 14-15 miles to go to Church in Brooksby. They went to the Lutheran Church that was a quarter mile from their house before then. He took his catechism in the Lutheran Church. There was service every week, because it was a big Scandinavian community there. They didn't go every Sunday, but probably 60% of the time. Once they got their car, they didn't go to the Lutheran Church anymore except for special gatherings.  The people were very kind and welcoming. He never felt unwelcome. Everything was so tasty. They carolled. Christmas day they went to church. Family would come over for meals. 2 or 3 different groups would come carolling. The children, the young folk (teenagers), and then the young adults. They had brunch/breakfast. If there was a dry patch in the yard, they had a ball game. There were new animals and it was spring. On Monday, the boys used to come in and 'drown' the girls, they would visit the young girls and poured water on them. On Tuesday, the same girls could go and do it to the boys if they could get their brothers to drive them there. Her mother and sisters made Easter eggs. Thinks the dyes were purchased. She didn't make Easter eggs. Relatives came over. More significant than New Years. Praznyk they would butcher chickens the day before and make chicken soup and Saskatoon berry pie. It was a big deal. Sports days were held at the church. Can't remember exactly when it was. It was fundraising. Around thanksgiving was bazaars and fall suppers. These were fundraising events. They would go around to all of the different church praznyks. In July they went to the church to learn Ukrainian and religion. They went everyday and the priest stayed at her place. He found relatives, because he saw an obituary in the Ukrainian Voice newspaper. They mostly talked about the Old Country. They heard stories in the winter more. \n\nTony went to dances when he was driving age. They did barn dances. Just regular dances were popular. There was a Swedish band that would play dances. They were popular. Martin Lynn Orchestra. There was no singing, just bands. Phyllis' dad would chaperone her sisters at the dances. \n\nPhyllis took mandolin lessons, but then there was no one to take lessons from anymore. For Phyllis, they read for relaxation and pleasure or they would go outside and play. Phyllis and her friends would 'bug the boys'. They would slide into pig straw piles. They played shinny hockey with willow sticks and horse turds. In the summer, they played a lot of ball or cricket. They were into boy sports. She had a play house she built herself out of willows. Tin cans to play with were a special treat. Her parents' friends were mostly church friends. Her dad was on the school board and church executive. He did a lot of reading in the evenings.
