When she was 6 years old and went to school, the teacher couldn't manage to say Johanna, so she was called Anna. She went back to being called Johanna once she got to high school. Johanna didn't want to be a nun as she thought the life wouldn't suit her.\n\nWhen Johanna left high school, she went to normal school in Regina to become a teacher. She taught school for 6 years after that, until 1937. She married a farmer. Johanna had 5 children. They were born in 1938, 1939, 1941, 1945, 1949, and two miscarriages. She thinks she lost one because she put storm windows in. He had 3 brothers, the 2 older brothers were both married. The older married brother raised Johanna's youngest uncle while the younger married brother raised Johanna's father. His name was Gerhart. They came to Canada because there was gold and one could get a homestead. Johanna's father came in 1903 and married Johanna's mother in 1908. Johanna's father was the first of the 3 brothers to move to Saskatchewan. The others were unable to get homestead near Leroy, so they settled near Denzil, Saskatchewan.\n\nJohanna's parents were married in the Catholic church and there was no big party or dance. In 1909, they had a boy that did not survive very long. Johanna's sister Agnes was born in April of 1910. In 1912, Johanna had a sister that was born, but she also died. The house was built in 1914, and 3 days after Christmas, Johanna's brother was born. Johanna's father said that was the best Christmas present ever. Another brother was born that survived. Her uncle Reynold came to Canada to visit them, but returned to Russia because he had a lot of money buried there. Johanna thinks he must have been killed because they never heard from him again. Johanna's mother could speak German and Russian.\n\nJohanna's husband was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. She describes some of her husband's health problems. She talks about some of her own health problems and the issues with anaesthetics. There were lots of vegetables and her father was a good butcher. He made all kinds of sausages and her mother maintained a large garden. She's not sure her food was very different from anyone else.\n\nAt Christmas, they used to eat some German foods. There's one dish that was made with milk, poppy seeds, bread crumbs, and sugar: Johanna says it was very good.\n\nFrom the store they would purchase flour, sugar, porridge, cream of wheat, red river cereal (a flax cereal). They had the porridge, cream of wheat, and red river cereal for breakfast. For dinner, Johanna's father butchered chicken, pork, or beef and her mother made peas, beans, corn, or beets. Her mother knew how to can these goods as well. They used the combine with horses, though they later had a tractor. At the end of recess, some kids told Johanna and her sister that school was done and that it was time to go home. As they were walking home, a child caught up with them and told them that they had to go back to school. Some of the kids knew both English and German and would play pranks like that, but Johanna says it wasn't funny. Johanna's mother made them go to school, regardless of the conditions. Once she learned English, Johanna liked school a lot more. When she didn't know English, the other kids would play mean tricks.\n\nJohanna learned English naturally by going to school. She doesn't remember how or when she learned English. Johanna's family always spoke German at home. Her father could speak English fluently, but her mother never could. Because her father worked at the butcher shop in the United States, he learned English fluently. Spare time was spent knitting or crocheting any number of clothing items for people. She was never happy unless she was working. She never played cards as she was too hard working. Johanna learned how to crochet and knit, though she didn't do it as much as her mother.\n\nThe sod house had doors and little else. The other house was wonderful: they had 4 bedrooms upstairs, though no indoor plumbing. Her brother, when he inherited the house, installed indoor plumbing. They said that rosary every evening as her father was very religious. They prayed before and after eating. Her mother was also very religious. Johanna made sure they said the rosary in her home as well and still does. She says the Rosary in English, though they said it in German when she was a kid. They had to kneel for it as children, but Johanna sits for it now.\n\nJohanna's family would go to church every Sunday. When she lived in Bruno, Johanna went to mass every day.\n\nIn high school, Johanna learned to eat with her left hand because they would not let her eat with her right hand. The high school in Bruno was a boarding school with 40 or 50 girls. Johanna didn't mind this as it was the only way she could complete high school. Johanna thought she might want to be a nun, but didn't like the idea of being caged up. She taught in Englefeld for 3 years before getting married and retiring.\n\nJohanna talks about putting together a Christmas concert. The first step is knowing what to put on. Then she had to give out the parts to the kids and to make sure they knew their lines. In For Sak and Englefeld, Johanna just taught in the Summer months. January and February didn't have school.\n\nOne of her students came to visit Johanna in Humboldt. When Johanna was teaching him, his father died. He bumped into Johanna's son in Saskatoon who let him know that Johanna was in Humboldt. He came to visit Johanna and brought her an apple.
