After some time in Stephenfield, Manitoba, she grew up in Oak Lake, Manitoba. She lived there from 1928 to 1949 when she got married. Her family came to Canada in 1924. Her father came from the Khortytsia colony, her mother from 'the Ukraine, Russia'.\nIn 1949, she moved to Whitewater, Manitoba, with her husband who worked as carpenter. Later, they moved to Winnipeg. She was a housewife and worked in the garden.\nShe finished grade 8 in Oak Lake. She had to repeat grade 2, as had her sister. She and her sister were scalded by hot water after a pot fell on them from the stove. Her sister had severe burns on her feet and had to learn to walk again. She describes in detail how her sister's burns were treated, e. g. by putting lard on them. She herself had burns at the back. They didn't have a hospital, the doctor came to the house.\nShe left school at 16 as she was the oldest one and had to help on the farm. She did everything on the farm.\nHer teacher was Welsh and she didn't like Germans at all, it was during WW II. She would give German children worse marks.\nShe went to school with her uncles only a few years her senior. But except for the Welsh woman, the teachers were very nice. The Welsh woman would mistreat the boys physically. One of her uncles died at the age of 19 of aneurism in his head, and Sawatzky thinks that his death could be related to what the teacher did to him. It could also be due to an ice skating accident. They found him dead in the barn. He was to get married.\nIn the wintertime, they would go to school with horse and buggy. As the family had no money, they paid the doctor with wood or farm products.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58589/file/132673#t=4.0,856.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58589/file/132673/index/52406/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"burns","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"death","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"education","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"farm chores","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"folk medicine","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"immigration","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"lard","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"scalding","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"school violence","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"teachers","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58589/file/132673#t=4.0,856.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58589/file/132673/index/52406/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Welsh","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"WW II","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58589/file/132673#t=4.0,856.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58589/file/132673/index/52406/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Farm chores, grandparents, reflections on being a housewife","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58589/file/132673#t=856.0,1074.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58589/file/132673/index/52406/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Sawatzky recalls that her chores on the farm included threshing, stooking, hauling grain, picking corn and digging potatoes.
